Scientists Develop Human-Powered Battery For RFID Implantable Chips

The video footage above demonstrates installation of a complete, flexible, and integrated system that is capable of harvesting and storing energy from the natural contractile and relaxation motions of the heart, lung, and diaphragm.

A group of United States and Chinese researchers have collaborated to created a tiny implantable batteries that feed off of human energy. These thin, flexible mechanical energy harvesters have had been successfully tested on cows. The process uses what is known as conformal piezoelectric energy harvesting and storage from motions of the heart, lung, and diaphragm.

It the future, they say, it could be used to power a range of gadgets. Will it be long until you will charge your I-phone by plugging into your own body?

So how piezoelectric power plants work? The tiny piezoelectric power plants are made of lead zirconate titanate nanoribbons, incased with-in biocompatible plastic. The integrated rectifier converts the electric signal which stores it in a tiny rechargeable battery. Multiple batteries can be combined for more power and storage, the researchers do believe.

These will at first be sold as a good product. Subsequently, heart rate monitors, pacemakers, cardioverter-defibrillators, and neural stimulators constitute broad classes of electronic implants that rely on battery power for operation, and will further these technologies.

The National Academy of Science’s Website had this to say about conformal piezoelectric energy harvesting:

“Heart rate monitors, pacemakers, cardioverter-defibrillators, and neural stimulators constitute broad classes of electronic implants that rely on battery power for operation. Means for harvesting power directly from natural processes of the body represent attractive alternatives for these and future types of biomedical devices. Here we demonstrate a complete, flexible, and integrated system that is capable of harvesting and storing energy from the natural contractile and relaxation motions of the heart, lung, and diaphragm at levels that meet requirements for practical applications. Systematic experimental evaluations in large animal models and quantitatively accurate computational models reveal the fundamental modes of operation and establish routes for further improvements.

Another new technology that will benefit from this is RFID. Humans will now be able to implant  self-powered microcomputers inside of ones body. Like all technology, it is neutral. It is how we use it that dictates the tools outcome.

As the line between humans and robots begin to blur the government can be seen blow voicing concerns over trans-human technology.
