Democrat Lawmaker Fires Gun In Office – Says It Was A Mistake
Freedom Outpost
Kentucky lawmaker Leslie Combs (D-Pikeville) recently made a big bang in her office. Combs accidentally fired her gun in her Capitol Annex office on the first day of the legislative session in January.
So what happened? According to Rep. Jeff Greer (D-Brandenburg), “She was emptying the weapon and she thought that it was empty and pointed it away and down and pulled the trigger and it went off. Thankfully, no one was hurt. I know she feels terrible about it. … It’s just an unfortunate event.”
Yeah, thankfully no one was hurt. While it’s admirable that she at least pointed it away and down, one wonders why she pulled the trigger. The weapon was a semi-automatic. According to proper gun safety, Combs should have removed the magazine, cycled the weapon several times and inspected the magazine well and chamber, not point it away and pulled the trigger.
“The bullet struck the carpet and broke into pieces,” said Speaker of the House Greg Stumbo (D-Prestonsburg). “And the primary piece and other pieces were found lodged in the bookcase, the wooden bookcase that sits next to her desk.”

“A special kind of stupid”. With pro-gun ‘friends’ like this, who needs gun control advocates?
This lawmaker did NOT follow the unloading procedure “as she was trained to do.” If she did, she needs a new trainer. The proper method of unloading a semi-automatic handgun is to FIRST chamber check the weapon to determine the status of the chamber. THEN remove the magazine, THEN pull the slide back to eject the round in the chamber. FINALLY, perform another chamber check and magazine well check to confirm the chamber and magazine well are EMPTY. Very simple. Very easy. Just follow the proper steps IN THEIR PROPER ORDER.
What this lawmaker did was she reversed the unloading procedure by first pulling the slide back to eject the round that was in the chamber and then she removed the magazine, thinking the gun was unloaded. In reality, when she pulled the slide back, she ejected the round that was in the chamber and as the slide was released it loaded the chamber with a round from the magazine that was still in the gun. After removing the magazine, she failed to do a chamber check to confirm the chamber was empty and instead pressed the trigger… BANG!
Her CWP should be revoked until she can prove basic competence with a firearm. Maybe start with basic terminology (unload or clear a firearm versus “disarm”; negligent discharge versus accident or mistake).
