UPDATE: AUG 21, 2014
Two police offcers, unamed and protected, killed Powell, 25, known to be mentally ill or with a “learning disability, reportedly after a confrontation with police Tuesday a few miles from where unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot and killed by police officer Darren Wilson earlier this month.
Two witnesses in the extremely graphic video describe the police handcuffing Powell after killing him – as caught on the eye wtiness video.
The St. Louis Police Department said the two officers fired 12 shots at Powell, after he ignored orders to put down a knife. (They had previously claimed, before the eyewitness video was uploaded, that he had his hand up threatneing them with it, so they began shooting him.)
It appeared to be a steak knife, the spokesperson said.
U.S. attorney general Eric Holder met with 50 community leaders, explaining he could understand why black civilians are distrustful of those sworn to serve and protect.
“I understand that mistrust,” Holder said. “I am the attorney general of the United States. But I am also a black man. … I can remember being stopped on the New Jersey turnpike on two occasions and accused of speeding. … I remember how humiliating that was and how angry I was and the impact it had on me.”
He noted, “We are starting here a good dialogue. But the reality is the dialogue is not enough. We need concrete action to change things in this country.”
“History,” Holder said, “simmers beneath the surface in more communities than just Ferguson.”
His Hands Were By His Side
A new video showing St. Louis police shooting to death the “mentally ill” young man Kajieme Powell on Tuesday has been posted, evidence of a different story to what police released. This homicide was committed only four miles from where police fatally killed Michael Brown on August 9.
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department released cell phone footage Wednesday of police shooting Kajieme Powell, a 25-year-old black man killed Tuesday in St. Louis, according to St. Louis Public Radio.
The footage that police released and the police department’s statement do not concur with what a neighbor’s video shows.
Suspected Theft of Drinks and Donuts
A convenience store owner called 911 Tuesday when he suspected Powell stole drinks and donuts from his shop, according to a recording of the call.
Another woman called to report Powell was acting erratically and had a knife in his pocket.
Two officers in a police SUV responded to the calls, the cell phone video shows. When the officers got out of their vehicle, Powell walked in their direction, yelling and telling them to shoot him.
Described by neighbors as mentally ill, Powell was carrying a knife. He can can be heard in the video shouting, “Shoot me! Shoot me! Shoot me! Shoot me now, Motherf–ker!”
Both officers opened fire on Powell when he came within a three or four feet of them holding a knife “in an overhand grip,” according to St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson on Tuesday.
New Video Undermines Police Statement
The newly released cell phone footage undermines the police chief’s statement. It shows Powell approaching the officers, but not coming as close as reported and his hands were at his side.
The officers began shooting within 15 seconds of their arrival, according to the new video (below).
The first shot can be heard in the video as Powell, dressed in white pants and a black long shirt, is clearly seen with both of his hands down by his side, not “in an overhand grip,” as police claimed.
Directly below is a screenshot taken as the police officer’s first shot was fired.
Then, the two police officers shot Powell with a barrage of bullets. Nine shots in total are heard.
“Over a fucking honey bun,” says one man. “Over two fucking sodas, y’all,” says another. “They could’ve tased that man.”
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department released the video and 911 calls, telling St. Louis Public Radio that it planned to act transparently.
Warning, the new video below is graphic.
