Kennedy joins cycling event in the disaster-hit area

US Ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy has participated in a cycling event in an area that was severely hit by the massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011. The ambassador joined about 3,000 people in the second-annual Tour de Tohoku in Miyagi Prefecture on Sunday. The event is being held to boost awareness of reconstruction efforts in the disaster-hit region. Kennedy told participants that this was her third visit to the prefecture and that she received strength and courage from local residents. The US ambassador added she’s looking forward to seeing the beauty of nature along the coast. The route begins and ends in Ishinomaki City. Participants could choose courses ranging from 65 to 220 kilometers. Local food is being served along the way.
