Active California Police Chief Joins Police Violence Protesters

In a bold and refreshing move Chris Mangus, a Northern California Police Chief, joined the Eric Garner/Michael Brown protesters prominently holding a sign that read, “#BlackLivesMatter”. He was one of several NorCal cops standing in solidarity against police brutality and excessive force. Their show of support was joined by Richmond Mayor, Gayle McLaughlin, and City Council members Jael Myrick, Jovanka Beckles and Tom Butt.

The protest organized by members of the nearby RYSE Youth Center. Members intended to stand on the sidewalk with their “hands up”  for 4½ hours beginning at 10am, the time of Brown’s death; the same amount of time Brown’s body lay dead and bleeding on a Ferguson, Missouri street.

In a statement to Contra Costa Times, Chief Mangus said,

“I spoke with my command staff, and we agreed it would be nice to convey our commitment to peaceful protest and that black and brown lives do matter. And to help bridge the gap that we understand sometimes exists between police and community around certain issues.”

If more law enforcement officials stopped deflecting and denying and behaved like Mangus and his staff we might make some real headway in a discussion that is not going to go away any time soon.
