Rasmea's Judge Rules Jaw-Dropping Decision

Rasmea Odeh, human rights defender, has been given a ruling by a judge that is truly jaw-dropping, after decisions made by grand juries on police killings of two unarmed black individuals what set the nation on a wave of protests.

The beloved Rasmea is heading home after arrested and held in solitary confinement, according to an announcement Monday by the Rasmea Defense Committee moments ago.

“We are pleased to announce that Judge Gershwin Drain just filed his ruling granting Rasmea’s motion for reconsideration of his November 10th order revoking her bond. RASMEA IS COMING HOME!” the statement reads.

In the ruling, the judge wrote: “Defendant’s dedication to her community work and the people that such work assists, as well as the presence of relatives in Chicago, demonstrates by clear and convincing evidence that she is not as significant a flight risk as originally believed.”

The defense committee is working to secure the $50,000 cash bond for Rasmea’s release.

“We also thank you all for your passionate work to help restore her freedom,” the committee said. “We believe that the hundreds of letters to the judge, and the incredible response to the county jail’s punitive measure of placing Rasmea in solitary confinement, played a major role in making this happen.

The defense committee added: “In addition, all your letters to Rasmea helped keep her spirits up, and strengthened her resolve to continue challenging the unjust ruling, detention, and treatment in jail.”

Protests broke out across the US and further soon after Rasmea was convicted.

“Of course, we are going to appeal the conviction,” her defense committee said, adding, “and there is still a ton of organizing work to be done, but today we celebrate and prepare to bring Rasmea home. Thank you all for your support!“

The beloved Rasmea Odea, 67, is a torture survivor, tortured by Israeli forces. She is a human rights leader of Chicago’s Palestinian community. For days, she saw her supporters pack a Detroit courtroom for continuing testimonies and cross examinations by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the judge’s continuing to strike any reference to Israelis brutally torturing her to force a confession about a terror plot.

After her sentencing and jailed, Rasmea’s lawyers and friends became increasingly worried about her condition. She’d been held in solitary confinement twelve consecutive days.

Rasmea, from Chicago, had been held in St. Clair County Jail in Port Huron, Michigan, since her 10 November conviction on immigration fraud charges.

I’m truly grateful for the work of Rasmea’s defense committee, all the petition signatories and protesters. Can’t take any more news about injustices today.
