This will freak out the Chinese communist government! Documentary “Free China” broadcasted in China

China has a world renowned media censorship and the internet firewall. Anything that the government doesn’t want its people to see will not appear in any media within the country. But there is this one independent documentary that the Chinese communist regime definitely hate to see made it way to China. 

What is this powerful film? It is called Free China: The Courage to Believe. It tells the remarkable story of courage and freedom of two Falun Gong practitioners, Jennifer Zeng and Charles Lee. One of them was living in New York and the other was living in Beijing. How their lives become linked?  

According to the official website of the film:  

“Free China: The Courage To Believe” tells the true story of a mother and former Communist Party member, Jennifer Zeng, who along with more than 70 Million Chinese were practicing a belief that combined Buddhism and Daoism until the Chinese Government outlawed it. The Internet police intercepted an email and Jennifer was imprisoned for her faith. As she endured physical and mental torture, she had to decide: does she stand her ground and languish in jail, or does she recant her belief so she can tell her story to the world and be reunited with her family? A world away, Dr. Charles Lee, a Chinese American businessman, wanted to do his part to stop the persecution by attempting to broadcast uncensored information on state controlled television. He was arrested in China and sentenced to three years of re-education in a prison camp where he endured forced labor, making amongst other things, Homer Simpson slippers sold at stores throughout the US.

With more than one hundred thousand protests occurring each year inside China, unrest among Chinese people is building with the breaking of each political scandal. As China’s prisoners of conscience are subjected to forced labor and even organ harvesting, this timely documentary exposes profound issues such as genocide and unfair trade practices with the West. The film also highlights how new Internet technologies are helping bring freedom to more than 1.3 billion people living in China and other repressive regimes throughout the world. 

Source:http://freechina.ntdtv.org/the-film/Sounds like a very inspiring story. But the Chinese government is scary again. Because after it has earned a dozen international awards and over 1000 screenings in 26 countries, it is now driving into China. But how did they do it?

To answer this question, we have to introduce the co-producers of the film. “Free China: The Courage To Believe” is co-produced by NTDTV, a non-profit TV network headquartered in New York, with a mission to be the ‘voice’ of those in China who aren’t able to gain access to uncensored news and information inside China. 

NTDTV has been broadcasting those uncensored information into China since 2001. How they do this is by the means of Satellite and Internet. 

According to an interview of Kean Wong, the producer of Free China, conducted by a Polish newspaper weekly Gazeta Polska, NTDTV broadcast through Satellite as well via unencrypted broadcasts. So anyone with a certain sized dish (of about 1 meter in diameter) can receive its broadcasts for fee. 

And there is the internet. China has its notorious internet firewall, which is build by Cisco. Shame on you Cisco! So the Chinese people can’t get access to Facebook, youtube, and NTDTV’s website. But there is a way to break through the firewall. 

NTDTV has partnership with FreeGate and DynaWeb. Some background of these companies. They are some big names in anti-censorship technology. FreeGate is the most widely used anti-censorship Internet software inside China. People use FreeGate to jump outside of the great internet firewall. DynaWeb are part of a consortium of companies who have been helping people inside China and around the world gain access to ‘Internet Freedom’ (please visit www.InternetFreedom.org for more information about this Global Internet Freedom Consortium.)

And this film was broadcasted  on January 23rd into China. Many people might watched the film through Satellite and internet. “We broadcast the film on our NTDTV.com website under our online ‘mainland China channel.’ People inside China get access to NTDTV.com (and other censored sites) by using this “FreeGate” software through thumbnail drives, disks, being emailed the software by friends etc (the software can be named anything so to no be so obvious),” Wong said.
