Genesis 16
1. And Sarai, Abram’s wife, did not bear children, and she had an Egyptian maiden whose name was Hagar.
2. And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold, the Lord has stopped me from conceiving, enter upon my maiden, perhaps she will conceive.” And Abram listened to Sarai’s voice.
3. And Sarai, the wife of Abram, fetched Hagar, her Egyptian maiden, ten years after Abram settled in the land of Canaan, and she gave her to Abram, her husband, as a wife.
4. And he entered upon Hagar so she would get pregnant, and as she saw that she had become pregnant, her mistress became denigrated in her eyes.*
5. And Sarai said to Abram, “I tricked you, I placed my maiden in your embrace, and as she saw that she became pregnant, I became denigrated in her eyes; the Lord will judge our motives.”*
6. And Abram said to Sarai his wife, “Behold, your maiden is under your authority,* do to her what is appropriate* in your eyes;” and Sarai, her mistress, berated her, and she ran away from her.*
7. And the angel of the Lord found her at the water well, in the wilderness, on the road to Gaddar.
8. And he said to her, “Hagar, maiden of Sarai, where are you coming from and where are you going to?” And she said, “From my mistress Sarai, I am running away.”
9. And the angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress and submit yourself into her hands.”
10. And the angel of the Lord said to her, “Your offspring will increase in number and they will be beyond counting.”*
11. And the angel of the Lord told her, “Behold, you are with child and shall give birth to a son, and you shall call his name Ishmael, because the Lord has heard of your obedience.
12. “And he shall be a helper of humanity, his hand shall be over all, and the hand of everyone shall be in his, and he shall be welcomed by all his brothers as their kin.”
13. And she called him by the name the Lord told her to call him, and she said to him, “You are of the God of Vision,” because she told him, “Behold, I even saw a vision after He saw me.”
14. That is why she named the well, “The Well-of-Life-of-Who-Saw-Me.” That is the one between Ra-qim and Gaddar.
15. And Hagar gave birth to a son for Abram. And Abram called the son Hagar gave birth to, Ishmael.

Genesis 17
1. And Abram reached the age of ninety-nine and the Lord revealed Himself to Abram and said to him, “I am* the Eil, the Almighty.* Worship before me and be without fault.
2. “And I shall make my covenant* between me and for you, and I shall enrich you exceedingly.”*
3. And Abram fell on his face, and God spoke and commanded him.
4. “Behold, I shall make my covenant* with you, and you shall become the father of many nations.
5. “Your name will not be called again Abram. Except your name shall be Abraham, because I give you as father to many nations.
6. “And I shall make you plentiful and increase your numbers well.* And I shall give you to the nations and there will emerge kings from your progeny.*
7. “And I shall make my covenant with you,* and with your offspring in their centuries until the Resurrection unto eternal life,* and I shall be your God and [the God] of your offspring after you.
8. “And I shall give you and your offspring the land where you reside, all the land of Canaan, until the inheritance of life eternal,* and I shall be to them their God.”
9. And God said to Abraham, “You, uphold my covenant,* you and your offspring after you, in their centuries.
10. “This is my covenant that you will uphold between me and you, that you shall circumcise every male.
11. “And that you will circumcise the flesh of your uncircumcision,* and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you all.
12. “And after eight days, you shall circumcise every male of yours, according to their lineage,* who are born at home and bought with money, from all the sons of foreigners who were not of your seed.
13. “You must circumcise,* the babies of your household and those purchased with money and my covenant shall be in your flesh to the resurrection of life eternal.
14. “And the uncircumcised male whose flesh of banishment* is not circumcised, that soul is lost from its people; you have then voided my covenant.”
15. And God said to Abraham, “Sarai, your wife, her name shall not be called Sarai, because her name is Sarah.
16. “And I bless her and also I shall give you a son from her, and I shall bless him and he shall be the progenitor of nations, and kings of the nations shall be from him.”
17. And Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and he said in his heart, “After a hundred years a son is born? And Sarah, after ninety years will bear a child?”
18. And Abraham said to God, “Ishmael then will get married and live according to your will.”*
19. And God said to Abraham, “Truly, your wife Sarah will give birth to a child for you, and you shall call him Isaac, and I shall make my covenant* with him to [the end of] the universe, and with his offspring after him.
20. “And as for Ishmael, [whose name signifies] your obedience,* behold, I shall bless him and enrich him, and I shall make him a great man indeed,* he shall bring forth twelve great rulers, and they shall provide him with a great nation.
21. “And my covenant I shall make with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear for you, in this lifetime,* in another year.”

Genesis 21
1. And the Lord recalled Sarah to the extent that He had promised.* And the Lord did for Sarah as He had spoken.
2. And Sarah became pregnant, so as to give birth to a son for Abraham in his old age, in the season that God promised her.*
3. And Abraham called the name of his son that she gave birth to, the one Sarah gave birth to, Isaac.
4. And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac after eight days, as God had instructed him.
5. And Abraham was a hundred years at the time Isaac was born to him.
6. And Sarah said, “God has given me a great joy on this day, whoever hears of it will be happy for me.”
7. And she said, “Who would have told Abraham that Sarah could nurse children, that she would give birth to a son for his old age?”
8. And the baby grew and was delivered, and Abraham celebrated with wine on the day of Isaac’s birth.

9. And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, that she gave birth to for Abraham, laughing at them.
10. And she told Abraham, “Throw out this maiden and her son, because the son of the maiden shall not inherit this together with my son Isaac.”
11. And this reaction really upset Abraham, being uttered regarding his son.
12. And God said to Abraham, “Do not allow the boy and your maiden to be denigrated in your eyes; however, listen to Sarah’s voice as to whatever she tells you, because it is through Isaac that your seed will be known.*
13. “And also the son of the maiden I shall make him into a great nation, because he is your offspring.”
14. And there rose Abraham in the morning and he consecrated the bread and a container of water and gave them to Hagar, and he consecrated it on her shoulder and the child, and he sent her on,* and she lost her way in the wilderness of Bar-Sheba.

15. The water ran dry and she threw the child under some brush.
16. She went and sat on the opposite side, distancing herself almost as far as a bowshot, for she said to herself, “I do not want to see the boy’s death.” And she sat facing him and cast her voice and cried out loud.
17. And God heard the voice of the child, and the angel of God called on Hagar from heaven, saying to her, “What is with you, Hagar? Do not succumb, because God has heard the voice of the boy and was moved by it.
18. “Rise, take the boy and hold on to him,* for I will make him a great nation.”
19. And God opened her eyes and she saw a water hole, so she went and filled the container with water and gave the child to drink.
20. And God was with the boy always, and he grew up and settled in the wilderness of Paran, where he learned bowmanship.
21. And his mother consecrated for him a girl from Egypt
