In 1939, The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in his favor and as a result, the University of Missouri was forced to set up a law school for African American students.
While Gaines waited for class to begin, he traveled around the south, working odd jobs and giving speeches before local NAACP chapters.
One night while visiting Chicago, he went out to buy a book of stamps but was never heard from since.
To date, he’s been missing for over 76 years.
