True and Bizarre!! The UK Campaign to Ban Sex Robots?

Does Austin Powers know about this? Now there’s a campaign to ban sex robots in the UK. Take that, Fembots!

The people supporting The Campaign Against Sex Robots include members of the Women’s Equality Party and Coalition Against Trafficking in Women. The leaders of The Campaign Against Sex Robots are ethicists and social justice warriors.

They believe that the development of sex robots further objectifies women and children.

Dr. Kathleen Richardson, an ethicist at De Montfort University in Leicester, thinks that the use of sex robots will reinforce sexism and misogyny. She told the BBC that the creation of such robots will contribute to detrimental relationships between “men and women, adults and children, men and men, and women and women.” She added that the way sex robots look and the “roles they would play” are very disturbing.

The Campaign Against Sex Robots makes their position clear: “The vision for sex robots is underscored by reference to prostitute-john exchange which relies on recognizing only the needs and wants of the buyers of sex, (while) the sellers of sex are not attributed subjectivity and reduced to a thing (just like the robot).”

One of the goals of the campaign is to encourage computer scientists and robotics engineers and designers to refuse to contribute to the development of sex robots by refusing to provide code, hardware or ideas.

Douglas Hines, the chief executive officer of True Companion, a company which has developed the first sex robot, argues that the sex robots are not designed to replace a wife or girlfriend. He argues that sex robots can be a solution for people who are between relationships or have lost a spouse.

“People can find happiness and fulfillment other than via human interaction,” he said..

True Companion introduced Roxxxy the sex robot at the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas. The sexbot will cost around $7,000. The company has reportedly already received thousands of pre-orders for the Roxxxy robots.

Not all robot ethicists are in favor of banning sex robots. Ron Arkin, a robo-ethicist at the Georgia Institute of Technology, says that sex robots can be used to treat a wide range of sexual problems. Some people might even fall in love with their robot. And is it really so hard to imagine a day in the future when somebody wants to marry their sexbot?

Of course, it probably goes without saying that there are already “love doll” brothels in Japan. And two New Zealand researchers, Ian Yeoman and Michelle Mars, predict that robot prostitutes will overtake human “sex workers” in some European brothels by 2050. They claim that “having sex with a robot is the future of sex tourism in Amsterdam.”

The people who want to ban sex robots are also working with an organization that is trying to prevent the development of autonomous killer robots called, naturally enough, The Campaign to Stop Killer Robots. Since the original Fembots were built to “seduce and destroy”, an alliance between the two groups makes sense to us.
