St Louis On Fire, Chernobyl-like Nationwide Nuclear Fallout Risk Surge, Church Burnings

Nuclear fires and racists are a recipe for catastrophe that St. Louis residents and people beyond fear. Major media, however, remains eerily silent about a nuclear hazard bearing down on this city compounded with seven black churches set on fire in the area where an underground fire heads toward a nuclear waste dump. A Fukushima-type event in the making would impact nationwide, experts say.

“We don’t go outside,” said one St. Louis resident during a public meeting.

New Northside Missionary Baptist church minister Rodrick Burton said he “expected more of a response” from the faith community to the fires several miles from Ferguson, six of seven in majority-black churches. Since 8 October, an alleged arsonist has targeted churches in the city of 318,000, a series of incidents that has left investigators puzzled, with no suspect or known motive to date.

Officials caution that it’s too early in the investigation to speculate whether the incidents are related to the fatal shooting of Michael Brown, the black youth police officer Darren Wilson killed last year in St. Louis suburb Ferguson. A grand jury failed to bring charges against Wilson.

The Department of Homeland Security issued a warning about the terror threat posed by “right-wing sovereign citizen extremists.” DHS described domestic terrorists as people “who believe that they can ignore laws and that their individual rights are under attack,” as Media Matters reported at the time and Atlanta Black Star reported Wednesday.

Earlier this month, John Carlin, assistant attorney general and head of the National Security Division at the Department of Justice, warned that domestic terrorist groups, not unlike ISIS are a real threat, spreading through social media.

Fire Nearing 40000 Tons Uranium

Beneath the surface of a St. Louis-area landfill and in the heart of the city lurk three things that should never meet: a slow-burning fire, a cache of Cold War-era nuclear waste, (separated by just 300 meters) and racism spurring the burning of seven nearby churches, six of which are predominantly attended by black worshippers.

Missouri Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal had said on Sep 17, 2015, “There are references that are in the reports that the Attorney General did with independent scientists where they say that what we have under the ground could end up as Chernobyl. What I am concerned about are the 40,000 tons of uranium that have been spread all over the place…

“We’re talking about the most potent uranium in the world… We’re looking at the cancer clusters… We’re looking at the number of children who have double sets of teeth, children who have missing eyeballs, the number of children who have brain tumors. This is not consistent with a normal community whatsoever.”

The leaked document warns a “catastrophic event” will be triggered if the nuclear material is ignited… radioactive smoke could erupt over the densely-populated area of St Louis.”

Mark Hague, acting chief of the EPA region that includes Missouri, said Monday that the public isn’t in any immediate danger from embers smoldering below Bridgeton Landfill. He says that fire is still 1,000 feet from the nuclear waste. EPA says a plan will come before the end of 2015 to ensure an underground suburban St. Louis landfill fire doesn’t reach a buried cache of nearby Cold War-era nuclear waste.

Meanwhile, arsonists are breaking records at setting black churches on fire – and make no mistake, all these fires appear to be the work of arsonists. Media’s lack of coverage on this story is highly-noticeable, given its hyper-intensive coverage of Baltimore rioters setting fire to a CVS earlier this year, aserts Ben Forstenzer with U.S. Uncut.

“It is arson,” St. Louis Fire Department captain Garon Mosby told Fox 2 Saint Louis. “These are being intentionally set.”

This most recent wave of church fires are occurring in St. Louis, near Ferguson, where racial tensions have been particularly high since the August 2014 shooting of Michael Brown. The department of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms is investigating the arsons.

On October 8th, the first fire was set at Bethel Non-Denominational Church. Between Oct. 10th and Oct. 14th, three more churches were burned — New Northside Missionary Baptist Church, St. Augustine Catholic Church, and New Testament Church of Christ. Early Saturday morning, another fire was set at the New Life Missionary Baptist Church. Five of the churches are within three miles of each other.

Before these latest church burnings, black churches burned across the South after the June 17 killings of nine people in racially-inspired act of domestic terrorism at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Florida, North Carolina, and Tennessee have also had a wave of fires. Only three were initially ruled arson, but Capt. Mosby told local media all five of these are under investigated as arson.

“The destruction of black churches and community activism is a popular tactic among hate groups,” Forstenzer says, reminding readers that the chuch is the heart.

“Strike at the Black church, and you strike at the heart of Black American life,” said journalist and commentator David A. Love.

White supremacist and affiliated groups planted more than 50 devices targeting black churches, black leaders, Jews, and Catholics between 1947 and 1965.  For 72 months, starting in January of 1995, 945 acts of suspected arson targeted places of worship, many of which were black churches, according to The Atlantic. This  led to creating the National Church Arson Task Force, soon disbanded.

Rev. Burton was heartened a majority white church affected by the fires, Shrine of St Joseph.

Sunday, the Rev Dale Wunderlich asked congregants to consider a donation for the other damaged churches on the city’s north side. Volunteers passed out collection baskets that were promptly filled.

“We are now part of a bigger picture,” St Louis resident Rev. Wunderlich told his congregation at the beginning of Sunday’s service. “It seems to me that we can’t sit back and do nothing.”

Many agree with the reverand as the underground smoldering fire is 1000 feet from the nuclear waste where an explosion and release would impact people in Missouri for generations and reach Americans nationwide.
