CME UPDATE: NOAA has updated their CME prediction model and are showing an impact by November 7th. The faint and relatively slow moving plasma cloud may deliver at least a glancing blow to our geomagnetic field and could spark another round of geomagnetic storming. Currently Minor (G1) storm levels are predicted.

An R1 (Minor Radio Blackout) event occurred due to an M3 X-ray flare on 04 Nov at 1352 UTC (04 Nov at 0852 EDT) as seen in this image from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory. The flare had associated radio sweep signatures often associated with a coronal mass ejection (CME). SWPC forecaster analysis of SOHO/LASCO coronagraph imagery concluded a partial halo CME did, in fact, occur with this event and is likely to have an Earth-directed component. ****UPDATE – A G1-Minor geomagnetic storm WATCH has been issued for 7 Nov. EXPLOSION RISES, FALLS BACK TO THE SUN: Sunspot AR2445 erupted during the early hours of Nov. 4th–but the blast lacked “umph.” Much of the material hurled aloft by the explosion fell back to the surface of the sun.

The flash of electromagnetic radiation registered M1.9 on the Richter Scale of Solar Flares. Plasma rushed away from the blast site, as usual, but only a fraction of it escaped. A dark magnetic filament connected to the underlying sunspot may have interfered with the escape.
