Powerball: No Winner, So Jackpot Hits $1.3 Billion

Lottery officials say no ticket matched all six numbers in Saturday’s record draw

The Wall Street Journal

The multistate Powerball lottery jackpot has risen to $1.3 billion, the largest U.S. lottery jackpot ever, after no one picked a winning number in Saturday’s drawing. The next Powerball drawing will be Wednesday, Jan. 13.

If a jackpot winner took the haul in a lump sum instead of annuity payments, it would be worth $806 million, according to Powerball’s official website. Saturday’s lump-sum payment would have been $558 million, according to Powerball. Saturday’s jackpot had been the largest of any lottery in U.S. history; now it has been surpassed.

The chances of winning the jackpot prize on Saturday were one in 292,201,338, according to the Powerball website. Despite the long odds, people lined up at stores across the country to buy tickets in the days leading up to the drawing.

The Powerball is a lottery operated by the Multi-State Lottery Association, a group of 34 state lotteries as well as lotteries in the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Though no one won the jackpot prize, ticket holders in various states won smaller prizes, some as high as $2 million. Non-jackpot prizes totaled about $159 million in Saturday’s drawing, according to Powerball.

At a gas station in Atlanta’s Little Five Points neighborhood, Powerball sales were slow on Sunday because “people figure they have a little time before the next one,” said clerk Mohammad Mafuzur Rahman, 24 years old.

With more modest lotteries, the store might sell 700 to 800 tickets a day, but the store sold more than 4,600 tickets on Saturday alone, he said. With an even larger jackpot now up for grabs, he expected ticket sales could reach 5,000 to 6,000 on the day of the drawing, he said.

The Powerball is not the largest lottery in the world. For example, El Gordo, “the fat one,” in Spain paid out cash prizes in euros of about $2.4 billion in December, though the grand prizes were capped at about $4.36 million per winning ticket. That lottery, started in 1812, is held every year around Christmas-time.

Personally, I think the Federal Reserve System is the biggest scam ever pulled on the American public.

I know its a scam and they have to take money from the 95% to pay out the other 5%; however, its only a couple bucks and if you do not play it you have zero odds of winning the jackpot. Call me what you want, but I am playing on Wednesday, and everyone of you people are lying if you say you are not willing to throw in a couple of bucks to play for a chance to win multimillion dollars and wouldn’t be happy if you won the jackpot.

I spend about $20 a year playing the lottery. Less than what it would cost to go see a movie. And yes, you can’t win if you don’t play

        • The Clucker

I’ll buy a few even though it may be a scam. People do win, and why not risk a few bucks to win a few hundred million?

    • Pink Slime

Sorry, but the prize is just too juicy and too big to ignore. People are gonna play it NO MATTER what! And there have been quite a few BIG winners the past few years.

Nothing will stop this one. Take your crayons and go home……

    • FindtheTruth

No less of a scam then “earning” 1.3 billion. I could name a few, but I shall refrain.

    • Geeper

This would be a great way to make a billion vanish from the economy.
