West Coast / Oregon struck by M4.7 (M4.9) earthquake 1/23/2016, Alaska Hit With 6.8 & 7.1 Today

As you can see quakes of increasing intensity have been popping off up and down the west coast durng the last few days and there have been several articles warning of the building threat of some major activity luming in the near future.

Well the future is now.

Two quakes (6.8 and 7.1) have hit Alaska early this morning.

I attempted to post a short report of events as soon as I received the info (about 0700 Eastern 1.24.16), but I was plagued with multiple internet speed and connection problems causing delays and then multiple copies of the same report posted.  All of my attempts to confirm the reports have been blocked one way or another, I’m still waiting for a USGS update on earthquake data.

I haven’t ever experienced this much trouble with the internet before so I don’t know if it’s just a fluke or malicious interference.

Anyway, here’s some data from Dutch’s site about activity from the past week

1/24/2016 — Large M7.1 (M7.2) earthquake strikes Alaska —

Noteworthy M4.2 strikes Pisgah Volcano Southern California January 24, 2016

Just as we were expecting to see, a large earthquake has struck Alaska measuring in a M7.1 (M7.2 revised). Additionally, pressure transferred within hours down the West coast of the United States, causing a noteworthy M4.2 earthquake East of Los Angeles near Pisgah Crater volcano. jan 24 2016 m7.2 earthquake alaska.

The large earthquake in Alaska was expected to occur this week. A forecast warning was issued for the region of Alaska, calling for possible very large movement.

Pisgah Crater Volcano was also expected to show renewed movement, and is a warning sign of building pressure on the West coast. Every time we see dormant volcanoes show movement down the West coast, we then see larger activity develop off the coast to the Northwest. pisgah craters jan 20 2016

Earthquakes and volcanoes 1/23/2016 — West Coast / Oregon struck by M4.7 (M4.9) earthquake — ALL West coast forecast areas now hit January 23, 2016

The West coast has been struck by a M4.7 (M4.9 revised) earthquake off the shores of Oregon. m4.9 oregon jan 23 2016.

The location struck is known as the North Gorda Ridge Segment, and is a fault zone mixed with volcanic fields reaching Northwards along the coast.

6 days ago, a warning was issued for the West coast to show renewed earthquake activity near the North Gorda segment, as well as multiple other locations.

As of January 23rd, all the West coast locations named in the earthquake forecast have been hit.

The areas named were Vancouver Island (calling for M4.0 – M5.0 activity)….. Coast of Oregon (calling for M4.0 – M5.0 activity)… Challis Idaho (calling for M4.0 activity), and the coast of Baja Mexico + Gulf of California (calling for large activity above M6.0).

Indeed each location was struck with the expected magnitude event.

Vancouver Island was struck by a M4.5 , Coast of Oregon was struck by a M4.9, Challis Idaho was struck by a M3.9, and the Gulf of California was struck by a large M6.7 … all these events occurred within the 1 week forecast time calling for the movement to strike.
