Most doomsday enthusiasts are aware of the Yellowstone supervolcano. Right now, it’s just waiting for the right moment to plunge almost all of North America into darkness.
At this point, it isn’t a matter of if this will happen, but when. According to some researchers, it could erupt any day now. Geologists are constantly monitoring Yellowstone for signs of volcanic activity that could indicate an eruption. Last month, they made an unsettling discovery.
The Shoshone River, which runs just east of Yellowstone, suddenly began boiling in certain areas.
Residents rightly suspected that this activity originated in a volcanic vent. What’s most disturbing is that this river has been void of all volcanic activity for more than 100 years.
Luckily, it stopped after a few days. That being said, the new volcanic vent released enough hydrogen sulfide into the water to create a two-mile dead zone in the river. As you can imagine, it also smelled pretty terrible.
Seismic activity near the Yellowstone supervolcano has slowly increased over the past decade. Could this be a sign of our impending doom?

Dude, this is fear porn. We can scream all we want about an active volcanic area over little shifts in the ground and the occasional strange doings at volcanic springs but that is normal stuff. There were plenty of warnings before Mt. St. Helens erupted. Mostly it was increasingly strong earthquakes. Start worrying when quake swarms become frequent and fairly powerful earthquake or two hit. Frankly 2/3s of the country is just plain screwed no matter how one looks at it. Evacuation would be a nightmare. The country would lose a sizable chunk of it’s “breadbasket” just as a mini-ice age will be setting in due to the massive amounts of dust in the atmosphere. Krakatoa would be a drop in the buckeet compared to this. It only released 11 metric tons of ash into the atmosphere and thereby dropped global temperatures 1.2C. Temperatures did not return to normal for 5 years. Guess what, there’s not sh!t we can do about it if Yellowstone erupts. It’s overdue. Use the “serenity prayer” and just do what is within your power. Have long-term supplies on hand and a means of fresh, clean water. Be prepared… Nothing to fear here, move along!
