First, in the April 24 presidential election, the frontrunning candidate of Austria’s anti-immigrant Freedom Party, Norbert Hofer, who many said was virtually guaranteed to become the central European country’s first “right-wing” president, mysteriously lost when some 31,000 mailed-in ballots tipped the vote against him in the last second, handing the election to his far more moderate, and pro-European challenged, Van der Bellen. Hofer’s defeat sparked widespread relief across the ranks of Europe’s unlected establishment bureaucrats, as his victory would mark yet another significant moment in the advance of nationalism across EU member states. As Newsweek put it, “in the wake of Brexit, it would be seen as another defeat for the European political establishment.”

Accusations immediately emerged that the vote had been rigged, with the traditional response that these are merely the deranged ramblings of sore loser “nationalists.” Only… that was not the case, and in July Austria’s Constitutional Court ruled that the presidential runoff election must be held again, after it found “widespread” voting fraud, handing yet another victory to “conspiracy theorists” everywhere. Europe at War: Germany Is Clearly Preparing for a War On Their Own Soil ~ link ~ link ~ I am reminded of that old Chinese curse: “May you live in interesting times!” Stirling

There have been several alarming developments in Germany over the past few weeks. For the first time since the end of the Cold War, the German government has told its citizens to begin stockpiling food and water. And not long after announcing that, the government suggested that they may bring back the draft, which was abolished in 2011 after it was deemed to be archaic and unnecessary.

Initially the government was reluctant to bluntly spell out exactly why they wanted to bring back conscription or why their citizens should start stockpiling necessities. But based on some of the reports that have come from the German government since then, it’s obvious that they’re preparing terrorist attacks. And not the kind of run of the mill attacks that Germany has seen over the summer. It seems like Germany is preparing for the kind of terror attacks that could break down their society.

In the past, Japan’s policy was guided by the principle of the indivisibility of economics and politics. That is to say that Japanese officials would refuse to discuss economic cooperation with Russian counterparts in isolation from the topic of the four disputed islands, which were occupied by Soviet forces at the end of World War II. Japan had already largely moved away from this position during the 2000s but Abe has now explicitly rejected it. The Japanese leader still urgently wishes to resolve the territorial dispute, yet, having observed the enduring failure of a hardline policy, Abe has decided to reverse the order of the process. Instead of holding back cooperation until after progress on the territorial issue has been reached, he has decided that a better way to induce concessions from the Russian side is to achieve a higher level of bilateral economic and political ties in advance of territorial negotiations. This is the key feature of the “new approach.”
