“Bust of the Year” Turns out to Be Blunder of the Year: Cops Mistake Kitty Litter for Meth

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

A Texas man is working to repair his reputation after he was mistakenly arrested for possession of a large stash of methamphetamine.

During a traffic stop in December, Ross LeBeau, 24, was arrested after police discovered what they thought was meth hidden in a sock in his car.

“They thought they had the biggest bust in Harris County. This was the bust of the year for them,” LeBeau told KETK news.

Two field tests yielded positive results, and LeBeau had his mug shot and fingerprints taken and was booked into jail.

LeBeau’s name and mug shot were promptly shared in a sheriff’s office news release that boasted the arrest “may have kept our children and loves ones free from being introduced to drugs.”

But last Wednesday, the case was dismissed after a test conducted by the county’s forensic lab revealed what was actually in the sock: kitty litter.

LeBeau said his father gave him the kitty litter because it is supposed to prevent car windows from fogging up.

It isn’t clear how the first two tests were so glaringly wrong, but LeBeau said he doesn’t blame the police.

“Ultimately it might be bad testing equipment that they need to re-evaluate,” his attorney, George Reul, said.

You think?

LeBeau said he would appreciate an apology, and that the arrest embarrassed him, and caused him to lose work.

“I was wrongly accused and I’m going to do everything in my power, with my family’s backing, to clear my name,” he said.
