A New York City Police officer was fatally shot in the head execution-style as she filled out paperwork inside a police vehicle in the Bronx on Wednesday.

NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill called the shooting an assassination and “unprovoked attack,” saying the officer was murdered simply because of the uniform she wore.

The officer was identified as 48-year-old Miosotis Familia, a 12-year veteran of the force and mother of three. Familia died soon after she was rushed to a local hospital. The gunman, 34-year-old Alexander Bonds, was killed in a shootout with police just blocks from where Familia was shot.

The shooting unfolded around 12:30 a.m. as Familia and her partner sat in a mobile command unit filling out paperwork. O’Neill said Bonds approached the vehicle and shot through the window, striking Familia in the head. A heart-wrenching call from Familia’s partner immediately went out across the police radio.

“I need a f—ing bus! 10-85 10-85! My partner’s shot! My partner’s shot! My partner’s shot! Hurry up, Central!” Familia’s partner screamed.

As efforts were made to save Familia’s life, responding officers noticed Bonds running a short distance from where the officer was shot. A pursuit followed, during such time Bonds opened fire on the officers, who promptly returned fire, killing Bonds.

During the shootout, an innocent bystander was struck in the stomach. He remains in stable condition and is expected to recover.

A silver .38-caliber revolver was recovered at the scene. It was later determined to have previously been stolen.

According to Bonds’ girlfriend, he was a cop hater who suffered from severe mental illness, which included paranoid schizophrenia. In the days leading up to the shooting, Bonds was reportedly in a “manic” state.

At the time Familia was killed, Bonds, who had a long criminal history and went by half a dozen different names, was also on parole for a 2014 robbery.

“Fully knowing the dangers that she faced, she suited up in uniform every day and stood tall against those who threaten and terrorize the good folks of the Bronx,” Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch said of Familia.

“She was on duty serving this city, protecting people, doing what she believed in, and doing the job she loved,” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said while calling the attack shocking.

“This murder in cold blood is a tragedy, and sadly it is the latest in a troubling series of attacks on police officers over the past two years,” U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement. “These attacks must stop and we must honor the service of every law enforcement officer and the memory of those we have lost in the line of duty.”

Sessions called the attack “cowardly.”

Likewise, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the shooting was a “horrific and senseless assassination” and a “devastating reminder of the risks these brave men and women face each day.”

According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, Familia was the 66th law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty this year, the 26th by gunfire.
