Russia Signs 49 Year Extension on Syrian Airbase

According to Kremlin’s official website on Wednesday, Vladimir Putin has signed an agreement which will give its airforce military access until 2066 to the Khmeimim Air Base, in Syria’s Latakia province.
The new defense protocol states that the agreement will have legal effect over a period of 49 years, and will have an automatic renewal for subsequent periods of 25 years.
According to TASS News agency, the agreement details are as follows:
“The protocol, which the Russian and Syrian officials signed of January 18, 2017, in Damascus says that Syria transfers to Russia on terms of gratuitous use until the dates of expiry of the agreement a land plot at Hmeymim air base and the installations located there.
The document aims to lay down the international legal grounds that will regulate the terms of deployment of the Russia air force grouping in Syria and will provide for the strengthening Russia and Syria’s defense capability proceeding from their mutual intention to consolidate defense cooperation

SANA (Moscow) – Russian President Vladimir Putin has endorsed a protocol on the deployment of a Russian combat air group in Syria signed earlier between the two countries.
The Kremlin e- portal stated that President Putin ratified “the protocol on the Agreement between the Russian Federation and the Syrian Arab Republic on the deployment of the air group of the Russian Armed Forces on the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic which was signed in Damascus on January 18, 2017.”
Head of the Defense Committee at Duma council Vladimir Shamanov has said that the ratification of this protocol will contribute to achieving stability in the entire region.
On September 30th, 2015, the Russian air force has begun a military operation upon a request from the Syrian State to support the efforts of the Syrian Arab army in its war against terrorism.
