Flight cancellations pile up as Harvey makes landfall

Flight cancellations grew Saturday as Hurricane Harvey’s effects were felt at airports across large parts of Texas. Airlines were waiving change fees for fliers ticketed to fly to airports in the storm’s path.

On Saturday, about 280 flights were canceled nationwide, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware. The bulk of that total came in Texas, where many of those cancellations were made preemptively even before Harvey made landfall. Another 50 flights had already been grounded for Sunday.

Flights at the airport in Corpus Christi had been suspended altogether since Friday afternoon. It was unclear when they might resume. The airport also took the unusual step of closing its terminal Friday evening.

At the Valley International Airport near Harlingen and South Padre Island, Southwest had suspended its entire schedule at least through late Sunday.

Flights continued to operate at other airports in Texas, though with some delays and cancellations.

In Houston, flights were taking off and landing at the city’s Bush Intercontinental and Hobby airports, though fliers faced delays and cancellations.

At Hobby airport, where Southwest is the dominant carrier, about 100 flights had been canceled for Saturday, as of 8:45 a.m. ET. That’s about a third of the daily schedule there, according to FlightAware’s calculation. At Bush Intercontinental – a major hub for United – about 60 flights had been canceled as of 8:45 a.m. local time, representing about 5% of the day’s schedule there. Travelers heading through other airports in south and central Texas should be prepared for disruptions. In Austin and San Antonio, for example, Southwest warned its schedules at those airports were expected to see “some adjustments” on Saturday – largely the ripple effect of Harvey-related schedule changes at Houston Hobby.  SOURCE USA Today

Hurricane Harvey hammers southern Texas as floods, fires plague residents

Hurricane Harvey spawned tornadoes, flooding, fires and widespread power outages across southern Texas early Saturday.

Behind the giant storm, the largest to hit Texas in more than a decade, production on oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico remained halted, coastal refineries were idle and thousands of cruise ship customers waited offshore until their vessels were able to dock safely. A massive fire destroyed at least three homes on Bolivar Peninsula late Friday night, according to 12 News Now. More than 200,000 homes and businesses were reportedly without power.

At least 15,000 people aboard three Carnival Cruise Line ships scheduled to return to Galveston this weekend were delayed or detoured due to the hurricane. The Port of Galveston was closed on Friday.

A statement from the Miami-based Carnival Cruise Line said the Carnival Freedom and Carnival Valor were at sea and would remain a safe distance from the hurricane.

Petroleum companies evacuated personnel from 86 Gulf of Mexico platforms, according to the Oil & Gas Journal.
