Puerto Rico Dam Residents Evacuate

Governor Ricardo Rossello said on Monday, most people living near a crumbling dam in storm-battered Puerto Rico have been moved to safety. He urged the U.S. Congress to fund an aid package to avert a humanitarian crisis after Hurricane Maria. The U.S. territory has a population of 3.4 million. Fve days after Maria struck with ferocious winds and torrential rains, much of the Caribbean island is still without electricity. It is the most powerful hurricane to hit Puerto Rico for nearly a century.

Hurricane Maria: Failing Dam Puts Many Residents In Puerto Rico At Risk | NBC Nightly News

The National Weather Service warned Friday that the failure of the Guajataca Dam in northwest Puerto Rico was “imminent” and could lead to flash flooding. Hundreds of people in communities near the dam have been evacuated.
