Parents, PLEASE educate your older kids! My prayers for the surviving families; how heartbreaking to know that your young daughter died like this.

A former Milwaukee-area police officer was charged Tuesday with homicide over the death of one of two women whose bodies were jammed into suitcases that were dumped along a Wisconsin country road.

Jenny Gamez and Laura Simonson were never seen again after meeting up with Steven Zelich, a man they met on a bondage site who sought a 24/7 slave. Then, a road crew worker made a horrifying discovery off the side of a highway.

Ex-cop charged with homicide over bodies in suitcases

A former Milwaukee-area police officer was charged Tuesday with homicide over the death of one of two women whose bodies were jammed into suitcases that were dumped along a Wisconsin country road.

Steven Zelich was charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the death of 19-year-old Jenny Gamez, of Cottage Grove, Ore. Police said he told investigators she died accidentally during sadomasochistic sex in a Kenosha motel in 2012.

Zelich, 52, was initially charged with hiding her corpse and the remains of 37-year-old Laura Simonson, of Farmington, Minn., who reportedly died in November in a motel in Rochester, Minn. Like Gamez, Simonson died after being bound and gagged during long S&M sessions arranged through chat rooms, Zelich reportedly told police.

Their bodies were found June 5 in two suitcases in Walworth County. A sheriff’s detective testified that Zelich had kept the suitcases in his suburban West Allis apartment and car until the smell became overwhelming. Police questioned Zelich at home in January and he allowed them to search the premises.

Gamez gave birth to a son when she was 15 but lost custody to the boy’s father in 2010. Her foster mother said she last spoke to her on Mother’s Day 2012.

Simonson’s family knew she had met Zelich on a bondage site and contacted police after she disappeared in early November. He told detectives he knew her but hadn’t seen her in several months.

A mother of seven who had struggled with mental illness, Simonson had placed her children in her father’s care. He said she had advertised as an escort on Craigslist.

Zelich was a West Allis police officer from 1989 until 2001, when he resigned rather than face charges after an internal investigation accused him of stalking and harassing more than a half-dozen women. Before his June 25 arrest, he had worked as a state-licensed private security guard. USA Today

Jenny Gamez Identified As Second Woman Found In Suitcase

Authorities have identified Jenny Gamez as the second woman found dead in a suitcase left on the side of a rural Wisconsin roadway.

According to the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office, Gamez, 21, of Cottage Grove, Oregon, disappeared in 2012. The positive identification was made using dental records.

The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office made the announcement at a Monday afternoon press conference.

Gamez’ naked and bound body was found in a suitcase on June 5, near Lake Geneva, in southern Wisconsin. Another suitcase found at the scene contained the body of 37-year-old Laura Simonson, 37, of Farmington, Minnesota.

Steven Zelich, 52, of West Allis, Wisconsin, was arrested Wednesday on two counts of hiding a corpse. Zelich allegedly confessed to police that he killed both women shortly after meeting them.

According to the criminal complaint issued against Zelich, he met Gamez online in 2012 and they met in person, in late 2012 or early 2013.

Simonson, a mother of seven, had been missing since Nov. 22. The criminal complaint filed alleges Zelich met Simonson last November after contacting her online too.

Officials on Thursday said they believe Simonson was killed in Rochester, Minnesota — more than four hours by car from Lake Geneva. Detectives reported recovering potential evidence of Simonson’s death at a hotel there on June 24, after hotel employees recognized Simonson’s photo and contacted police. Hotel records indicate Simonson and Zelich stayed in the room on Nov. 2 and Nov. 3, authorities said.

Zelich is a former police officer in West Allis, near Milwaukee, who resigned in 2001 after allegations of misconduct involving a prostitute, WISN 12 News reported. No criminal charges were filed.

Authorities at a media briefing on Thursday said they are investigating Zelich’s online activities and his possible involvement with bondage websites.

Zelich is being held on a $1 million bond in the Walworth County Jail. Gazettextra.com reports the Walworth County District Attorney’s office is expected to file homicide charges against him.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article misspelled the victim’s last name. It is Gamez, not Gomez.
