Turkey To Wield Russia's Best Anti-Air Technology

Turkey will soon begin to receive from Russia their advanced S400 Triumf air defense missile system now that details of a deal between the two nations have been finalized. Until now payment has been uncertain, but Turkey has agreed to pay 45% of the multibillion-dollar deal up front, while the rest will be funded by Russian loans.

The U.S. has criticized Turkey, their NATO ally, for buying technology that has not been held to NATO standards.

President Erdogan has shrugged of NATO’s protests, saying “What did you expect?”

For 2.5 billion dollars, Turkey will receive two S400 systems, as well as four batteries. In simpler’s terms, that’s two aiming and detection systems which include several devices designed to spot targets and guide the missiles, and then four launcher trucks equipped with four large launch tubes apiece.

The S400 has the power to destroy cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, or aircraft. It can even strike land targets as close as 400 meters away from launch, and as far away as 40 kilometers, or 25 miles. It’s a formidable brick wall to any potential threat that might take interest in Turkey.

What could bring Russia to occupy a Turkish city now if the two countries are dealing arms together? Perhaps Turkey’s NATO alliance will create further conflicts of interest. Perhaps Turkey will not uphold its promise to pay. Turkey could even betray its NATO allies and allow Russia a foothold in their land and ports.
