Another Fuse Lit On The Road To Armageddon

As of January 15th, 2018, the Israeli government has officially banned the medical treatment of all Hamas members and their families.

Until a few months ago, a decision stood to deny such care only to top Hamas officials and their families, and visitation rights were revoked for jailed Hamas prisoners. The previous restriction was made as a political attempt to pressure Hamas to release the missing bodies of IDF soldiers Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul, who were slain in 2014 during Operation Protective Edge. Hamas began firmly in their stance that no release would occur unless a large number of jailed terrorists were freed by Israel. Since then, however, that very offer by Israeli representatives has been rejected because of the condition that Israel would deport to Palestine those who might be released.

Some of the motive to escalate pressure on Hamas in this recent decision has most likely come from a lawsuit filed by the Goldin family, who claim the government is not acting quickly enough to retrieve their son’s remains. The state has responded to them saying they could only enforce these enhanced restrictions now because they have only recently become able to identify the Hamas affiliates.

There is sure to be an increase in international pressures after this decision becomes known in practice. When more Palestinians are denied medical treatment, whether justified or not depending who you ask, it will only exacerbate the violent tension between the sibling governments.

In many far more bloody wars, doctors could remain above political differences, honor their oath, and treat the enemy’s wounded when presented one. This is not always the case, but it is far from unheard-of. Israel’s government is now directly hindering that freedom. The intent is to pressure Hamas, but such a tactic will seldom hold sway over a group known for hiding itself within civilians and generating the maximum civil loss to Palestine. By including Hamas family members in this new policy, the Israeli government leaves itself open to international outrage when Hamas affiliates are seen suffering in the media.

In the long run, this will only serve to further demonize Israel in the eyes of the nations prophesied to invade her. The Gog and Magog war and the key battle in the Megiddo valley are both looming even closer by this seemingly small update. Yet another fuse is lit.
