CIA Boss Gives Latest Indication Trump May Consider Preemptive Strike on North Korea

The spy agency is briefing the president about military options on North Korea, which outside analysts warn could escalate to nuclear war.

The Central Intelligence Agency is briefing President Donald Trump on the risks and opportunities of a limited attack on North Korea, its director suggested on Tuesday.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo would not discuss the “wisdom of a preemptive strike” on Pyongyang or its nuclear weapons program, he told an audience at the conservative American Enterprise Institute. But in rare public remarks, Pompeo portrayed North Korea as an urgent priority for the agency, and disclosed aspects of its role in setting back Kim Jong Un’s nuclear program during his first year at Langley.

Kim is a rational man, Pompeo said the CIA had assessed. But it’s less clear that Kim takes seriously the prospect of a U.S. attack, something that could blunder the world into a devastating nuclear conflict.

Pompeo would not answer if options exist for Trump to attack North Korea short of a nuclear war. Analysts warn a limited strike would lead to such a war should North Korea retaliate and prompt escalation. He indicated instead the administration was developing a range of options spanning from diplomacy to war, so Trump will not face a binary choice between inaction and potential nuclear devastation.

“We’re working to prepare a series of options to make sure that we can deliver a range of things so the president will have the full suite of possibilities. The president is intent on delivering this solution through diplomatic means,” Pompeo told AEI’s Marc Thiessen.

“We are equally at the same time ensuring that if we conclude that is not possible, that we present the president a range of options to achieve what is his stated intention,” Pompeo continued, which he later described as to “denuclearize permanently” North Korea, “that we’re gonna foreclose this risk.”

A former North Korean spy, Kim Hyon-hui, indicated to NBC News that Trump’s goal of denuclearizing a country that has been a nuclear state for over a decade is not achievable diplomatically: “North Korea won’t give up its nuclear weapons. They’re its lifeline.”

North Korea THREAT: Trump must prepare for WAR on Kim and take military action NOW

DONALD TRUMP must start loading up his naval and air bases in South Korea in preparation for war on Kim Jong-un, Former US Army General and Defence Analyst Jack Keane has warned.

North Korea and America have remained at odds in recent months, with Kim Jong-uncontinually threatening to attack the US with his nuclear programme.

Defence Analyst Jack Keane said America must stop sending military families to South Korea in order to allow the US to prepare for a war on North Korea. 

Mr Keane said America must “start to bring our forces into the theatre” in an effort to shut down Kim Jong-un’s nuclear regime. 

Speaking on Fox News, Mr Keane said: “I firmly believe that if you want to prevent war then make sure you are fully prepared for it.”

“If we are saying we are going to go to war to prevent him from having a nuclearised ICBM we have to show him some of that capability. We should not just be talking about it. Flying a bomber in for two or three days isn’t impressing anybody. 

“Let’s put in place some of those resources that we would need to thicken the defence in South Korea and load up those bases, naval and air bases, with the capabilities we need. 

“And then stop sending the military families to South Korea, that doesn’t make any sense to me whatsoever.”   

But Mr Keane said America must first take the country down electronically by attacking its information and commander control systems. 

Lastly, he insisted Donald Trump must also enforce a naval blockade on North Korea in an effort to cut off the “backdoor that we know exists where he is getting fuel and other supplies”. 

In an effort to stop the rogue nation, the United Nations Security Council imposed tough sanctions on North Korea following its continued missile testing. 

The resolution seeks to ban nearly 90 percent of refined petroleum product exports to North Korea.

Following the UN vote, Donald Trump wrote on Twitter: “The United Nations Security Council just voted 15-0 in favour of additional Sanctions on North Korea. The World wants Peace, not Death!”

The North Korea foreign ministry responded to the UN sanctions and branded them an “act of war” and said: “We define this ‘sanctions resolution’ rigged up by the US and its followers as a grave infringement upon the sovereignty of our Republic, as an act of war violating peace and stability in the Korean peninsula and the region and categorically reject the ‘resolution’.

“North Korea’s nuclear weapons are a self-defensive deterrence not in contradiction of international law.

“We will further consolidate our self-defensive nuclear deterrence aimed at fundamentally eradicating the US nuclear threats, blackmail and hostile moves by establishing the practical balance of force with the US.”
