In a similar vein, Russian President Vladimir Putin has now shared his own predictions regarding the imminent threat of a robot uprising and the international race to develop artificial intelligence. 

Talking with students last Friday, the former member of the KGB said (quite bluntly) that whoever reaches a breakthrough in AI will no doubt come to dominate the world – for better or worse.

“Artificial intelligence is the future, not only for Russia but for all humankind,” Putin explained, emphasizing that “it comes with colossal opportunities but also threats that are difficult to predict.”

He said that: “the one who becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world.”

The Russian leader predicts that future wars would be fought by drones and “when one party’s drones are destroyed by drones of another, it will have no other choice but to surrender”.

China and the US are the current front runners of research into AI, which could soon be used to control drone swarms, fleets of quadcopters that use a shared “brain” to surveil and attack enemies.

Putin warned that “it would be strongly undesirable if someone wins a monopolist position” and promised that Russia would be ready to share its know-how in AI with other nations.

Earlier this year, SpaceX founder (and real-life Tony Stark) Elon Musk joined over 100 robotics experts in calling on the United Nations to ban the development of such weapons.

The team said the introduction of “lethal” autonomous technology had the potential to lead to a “third revolution in warfare” if countries were allowed to attach machine learning to nuclear weapons. 

Musk – in response to Putin’s statement – has since doubled-down on these warnings.
