ReFS vs. NTFS

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The Microsoft file managing systems, New Technology File System (NTFS) and the Resilient File system (ReFS) make the storage retrieval of file easy on your computer. The NTFS has been there for years, but in 2012 Microsoft came up with the ReFS which the company says it’s much reliable than the NTFS. However many people across the world are yet to adopt the ReFS as they still using NTFS to manage their files. Many users thought that the introduction of resilient file system was to replace the new technology file system which is not the case. The two file managing systems are still working excellently although not many understand the difference between the two. How then are ReFS different from NTFS?

What to know about ReFS

We asked Data Analyzers what they knew about the ReFS file system. They informed us that research and development was already being conducted. During the launch of the resilient file system in 2012, the Microsoft Company was happy to announce the new experience the system users will enjoy. The ReFS has the capability of handling massive files and at the same time ensure a high level of data integrity. ReFS can support a file volume of up to one yottabyte and a single file weighing 16 exabytes.

What are the ReFS pros?

The ReFS has been able to bring a lot of changes and new experience in data file management since it has quality features which are beneficial in the following ways;

  • The ReFS checks the file integrity automatically which enables the user to keep track of the file in storage to ensure there are no changes unless you make them.
  • The system provides data scrubbing to ensure the file is free from any virus that may tamper with your data.
  • The ReFS is very independent, and in case of any drive issues your data will still be safe and you can access it still in excellent condition.
  • The system protects your file data from degradation. Thus you are sure retrieving your data at the original quality.

Cons;

  • The performance rate of ReFS still below the NTFS despite having more promising features.

The NTFS

The New Technology File System has been in use for many years, and many people still prefer using it despite the introduction of ReFS. An essential aspects many users of the system is the capability to recover files in case of any system failure. NTFS also compresses the data automatically to fit in your operating system to enable comfortable reading and writing.

Pros;

  • NTFS ensures faster and easy access to your files once you store them in your computer by minimizing the disk accesses needed to find the file.
  • The system enables easy formatting of file volumes of up to two terabytes.
  • You can set security features to your files and folders to limit the number of users to access your data if you use the NTFS.
  • In some windows, 2000 OS can only accommodate the NTFS.

Cons;

The NTFS can be a perfect file managing system but in some cases may not be appropriate thus drawing the following disadvantages;

  • You cannot access the NTFS file volumes using the MS-DOS windows 98 and 95 due to the recent Windows 2000 NTFS upgrades.
  • Sometimes when small file volumes have small files, the NTFS system performance rate may drop and be somehow slow.
