U.S. And North Korea Summit Is Back On?

Yesterday we reported that President Donald Trump canceled the nuclear summit with North Korea and sent them a letter declaring this.

Today, Trump backtracked and said that the talks still could happen on June 12th.

Trump’s latest about-face sent officials scrambling in Washington. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told reporters diplomats were “still at work” and said Trump had just sent a note out on the summit, which could be back on “if our diplomats can pull it off.”

The vice foreign minister said in the statement on KCNA that “we have inwardly highly appreciated President Trump for having made the bold decision, which any other U.S. presidents dared not,” referring to the now-defunct summit. He added that the “one-sided cancellation” was a regrettable surprise, according to an NBC News translation.

“His sudden and unilateral announcement to cancel the summit is something unexpected to us, and we can not but feel great regret for it,” Kim said, according to an NBC News translation. “It is hard to guess the reasons. It could be that he lacked the will for the summit or he might not have felt confident.”

Regardless, Kim said, “we are making it clear that we are willing to sit down any time and in any way to solve the problem.”

It is clear that Kim still wants to work out the issues. The U.S. however still seems to be playing games with a cornered animal, so to speak. The DPRK clearly feels that the U.S. is acting in a one-sided manner which is far from diplomacy. In essence, the U.S. is issuing ultimatums which do not help the diplomatic process in any way shape or form. North Korea has stated that it never wanted to stop or cancel them and that this was purely a one-sided cancelation.

The fate of the summit is “entirely” up to the US, North Korea’s vice foreign minister Choe Son-hui said in a statement on Thursday. If the talks are canceled, Choe suggested the two countries could engage in a “nuclear-to-nuclear showdown”.

“Whether the US will meet us at a meeting room or encounter us at nuclear-to-nuclear showdown is entirely dependent upon the decision … of the US,” she said.

“We will neither beg the US for dialogue nor take the trouble to persuade them if they do not want to sit together with us.”

It is clear that North Korea wants to have REAL talks and not a one-sided deal. It will not fall victim to the tragedies of the “Libya model”, it will not give up its nuclear capabilities so that the U.S. can unilaterally sweep in and replace Kim Jong Un with another puppet government. The DPRK wants to have a two-way conversation, real diplomacy, which any country should have when entering into negotiations. What is also clear is that North Korea will not beg for diplomacy, and they will not sit by and be threatened either. If Trump wants real progress then he must be open to actual dialogue and compromises. Otherwise, the United States may just taste the threats that the DPRK has been saying.
