The trouble with billionaires

Truth be told, I’m not personally acquainted with any. They’re a relatively rare breed.

But maybe that’s not quite true…

Whatever Irving brother owns the shipbuilding business showed up on our unit one night. I guess that counts as knowing a billionaire.

And I was in line at the checkout at Sobey’s behind Frank Hasenfratz one time. He was buying a couple of pork chops.

That’s almost a bit messed up; a billionaire popping in to Sobey’s to pick up pork chops.

Then again, that was a few years ago. Maybe he wasn’t quite a billionaire yet.

But I digress.

The trouble with billionaires is they have too much money.

Where I come from, a million bucks is a lot of money. To be a billionaire you have to accumulate a million dollars not once, not twice, not ten times over…

No, you have to make a million a thousand times over!

That’s just stupid. The mere fact that we have such a thing as “billionaires” is a searing indictment of how we manage our economy.

Granted, some contribute more than others to this thing we call society, and I have no problem with rewarding them accordingly.

Let them be millionaires!

But once you’ve got billionaires there’s an obvious problem with how we tax wealth.

Then you’ve got all kinds of folks with way too much money doing hobby politicking.
