“PARIS: The last four years were the hottest since global temperature records began, the UN confirmed on Wednesday (Feb 6) in an analysis that it said was a “clear sign of continuing long-term climate change”.

“The UN’s World Meterological Organization (WMO) said in November that 2018 was set to be the fourth warmest year in recorded history, stressing the urgent need for action to rein in runaway planetary warming.”

On Wednesday it incorporated the final weeks of last year into its climate models and concluded that average global surface temperature in 2018 was 1 degree Celsius (1.8 Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial baseline levels.

“Temperatures had dropped in some parts to as low as -50, with shocking images of train tracks being set on fire in Chicago in order to keep them from freezing.”

“People were warned to stay indoors, and near a heat source, with reports of frostbite setting in after a few minutes spent outside. There were widespread shortages too in some states as energy supplies came under pressure.”

“‘The main distribution problem in this area is the mail delivery, which is shut down. I had clinics too that were closed,’ said Sidhbh. ‘I just stayed by the fire all day and caught up on paperwork!”
