“Have a party here”: video shows Israeli soldiers beating tied up Palestinians

An Israeli court has published footage of Israeli soldiers beating and amusing a tied Palestinian father and son. The two men, who are said to have helped a terrorist after a terrorist attack, suffered broken ribs and noses. A military court in Jaffa has now sentenced participating soldiers to prison.

A court in Jaffa released the video on Tuesday at the request of Israeli media. The footage shows soldiers of the ultra-orthodox 97th “Netzach Jehuda” battalion mistreating two handcuffed and blindfolded Palestinian prisoners in a military vehicle.

“We’re having a party,” one hears the laughing soldiers say, as they keep hitting the prisoners on the head and demanding that they “greet” them in the camera. One of the tied men was so badly injured that he was unable to be interrogated afterwards.

The soldiers pleaded guilty. They were sentenced to two and a half to six and a half months in prison. Several will be downgraded in rank. The incident occurred in January. Both captured Palestinians were accused of hiding a fleeing terrorist who had previously attacked a bus stop outside an outpost near Ramallah in the West Bank, killing two Israeli soldiers of the designated battalion.

The case attracted much attention in Israel. TV presenter Oshrat Kotler said that young IDF soldiers had become “human animals” after their return from the West Bank. “This is the result of the occupation” of the Palestinian countries, she said. The journalist’s comments earned both encouragement and criticism.

One of the soldiers explained that anger at the death of his comrades had brought him to this deed.
