Will Yellowstone Erupt Soon? Looks Like it Might...

Scientists are monitoring a 465 mile piece of magma that is rising closer to the surface underneath the caldera of the Yellowstone super-volcano. Scientists noticed in 2004 that the ground at Yellowstone was rising at a rate of 2.8 inches per year and up to 10 inches in some places by 2010. They are closely monitoring the magma plume as it is slowly but surely rising to the surface, and are searching for any potential patterns that could match those of any previous eruptions. Geologists have warned that once they see a pattern, an eruption could take place in as little as two weeks. If the magma begins to liquidize and move upwards at a faster rate, this will increase the likelihood of an eruption in the very near future.

Geyser activity has been seen to have increased dramatically. The Steamboat geyser has erupted 39 times so far since March 15 of 2018 and erupted only 11 times from 1990 to 2014. Right-around September of 2018, new geysers began to form in the park as rocks and steam were seen blasting upwards from the ground into the air. On September 15 of 2018, Ear Spring erupted sending plumes of water and rock up to 30 feet in the air, possibly the largest eruption it has had since 1957. It has been reported by some that the water temperatures at Yellowstone have risen by about 10 degrees, this has yet to be confirmed.

As of February 26 of 2019, the Yellowstone volcano has been experiencing tremors and seismic energy, prompting the need for study.

“More than 50 seismic trackers around Yellowstone volcano’s biggest lake have recorded evidence of tremors known as microseism. The Yellowstone discovery comes off the back of a study examining the presence of tremors in great lakes around the globe. Microseism is a faint shake of the Earth associated with the interaction of ocean waves and the seabed. In Yellowstone, trackers have found evidence of microseism on a much smaller scale, at the 135.9 square miles (352.1 square km) Yellowstone Lake in Northwest US.”

A 3.3 magnitude earthquake struck near the old faithful geyser today and seismic activity of all kinds is steadily increasing at Yellowstone.
