Live Stream: Manhunt For B.C. Murder Suspects - Personnel, Technology Being Used To Aide Manhunt

The man hunt for Bryer Schmegelsky and Kam McLeod continues.

Police believe Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, have taken refuge in the northern Manitoban bush near the town of Gillam, a place with incredibly inhospitable terrain. 

It’s been almost two weeks since a couple, an American woman and her Australian boyfriend, were found shot dead in a ditch off a BC highway and a week since police found another man killed. McLeod and Schmegelsky are suspected of killing all three. Schmegelsky and McLeod have been charged with second-degree murder in the death of 64-year-old Leonard Dyck, a sessional lecturer at the University of British Columbia. The two are also suspects in the double-homicide of Australian Lucas Fowler and American Chynna Deese.

“We can now confirm there has been two established and corroborated sightings in the Gillam area,” said Cpl. Julie Courchaine at a Thursday press conference. “These sightings were prior to the discovery of the burnt-out car. There have also been no reported stolen cars that could be attributed to the suspects. We believe they are still in the area.”

“There’s lots of dense bush, forests, swampy areas so it is very challenging,” Courchaine added.

Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said on Friday that the RCMP search for B.C. murder suspects Bryer Schmegelsky and Kam McLeod is being aided by an increase in police personnel as well as technology.

Alan Schmegelsky, Bryer’s father, told the Canadian Press that the last time he spoke to his son, Bryer claimed that he and McLeod were en route to Alberta to search for jobs and that he even purchased an expensive suit for job interviews. 

“Now I realize it’s his funeral suit,” he said.

Alan has said that he fears his son intends to go out in a “blaze of glory.”

“He wants his hurt to end,” he said.

Alan Schmegelsky said his son and McLeod had been working at Walmart together for more than a month after graduating high school, but were not satisfied with the job, so they hit the road in search of something better. Then, bodies began turning up.

Acquaintances described Bryer as a loner who was obsessed with video games and guns.

Madison Hempsted, who used to attend school with Bryer told the Global News that he used to talk about killing people — a lot. 

“All he ever said to me was how he wanted to kill me and ways he would do it,” she recalled, adding that he’d also talked about wanting to murder his own family.

Mathis Muller, another acquaintance, told the CBC Bryer wanted to start a militia.

McLeod’s dad, Keith McLeod, put out a statement saying that his son is “a kind, considerate, caring young man and has always been concerned about other people’s feelings.”

Law enforcement say the two may being using a different vehicle, maybe be on foot or even traveling separately. People are warned to not approach them but to call 911 instead.

According to the father of Bryer Schmegelsky, the two have been going into the woods for two-and-a-half years and would consider themselves survivalists. One resident of the nearby Fox Lake Cree Nation told the CBC there are numerous abandoned buildings in the bush that the teens could be making use of.
