Noam Chomsky: ‘We’re Actually Facing a Constitutional Crisis’

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Noam Chomsky may be 91 years old, but the man who The Intercept’s Mehdi Hasan calls “the most cited author alive” is in no danger of slowing down. As a linguist and activist, Chomsky has spoken out against American imperialism and for leftist causes since the 1960s. While he continues to do so during the Trump administration, that doesn’t mean his opinions can be pigeonholed — he’s equally tough on Democrats who fail to stand up to President Donald Trump and for progressive policies as he is on Republicans who prop up his presidency.

Chomsky may have a long history with these issues, but that history allows for nuance and for him to occasionally change his mind. He spoke with Hasan on the Deconstructed podcast, covering everything from withdrawing American troops in Syria, the odds that Trump will actually be impeached, the radicalization of the Republican Party, Bernie Sanders and much more.

When it comes to Syria, Chomsky is opposed to Trump’s decision to withdraw American troops. As he explained to Hasan, “A small U.S. contingent with the sole mission of deterring a planned Turkish invasion, which was obvious, is not imperialism.” Quite the opposite, he continues, “It’s protecting the Kurds from an expansion of the atrocities and massacres that [Turkish President Recep Tayyip] Erdogan has been carrying out both within Turkey itself and in the areas of Syria that he’s already conquered.”

On impeachment, Chomsky is frustrated that it took Trump asking Ukraine to investigate the Bidens before the Democrats would consider impeachment. “We’re actually facing a constitutional crisis,” Chomsky explained, referring to our current political moment.

However, “they’re going after Trump not on his major crimes but because he went after a leading Democrat,” he points out, before relating the situation back to Richard Nixon, asking, “Does that remind you of anything? Yes. Watergate. They didn’t go after Nixon on his major crimes. They were off the record. It was because he had attacked the Democratic Party.”

Chomsky is also suspicious that the impeachment inquiry will actually result in removing Trump from office. If anything, he explains, it will only make him stronger among his base:

What’ll happen is probably the House will impeach, goes to the Senate. The Republican senators are utterly craven. They’re terrified of Trump’s voting base. So they’ll vote to turn down the impeachment request. Trump will come along, say I’m vindicated. Say it was the Deep State and the treacherous Dems trying to overturn the election. Oh, vote for me.

He also believes that the current direction of the Republican Party shouldn’t come as a surprise:

That’s part of the problem of the Republican Party. Its primary constituency is extreme wealth and corporate power. Those are the ones they serve.

It’s increasingly becoming the case that a very small sector of voters, maybe 20% or so, who are white, often white nationalist, Christian, often evangelical, traditional, older, less educated, rural, can actually run the country.

As for the 2020 Democratic candidates, Chomsky is lukewarm toward Elizabeth Warren and more enthusiastic about Bernie Sanders:

I think [Warren] seems to me quite honest. I think many of her plans are perfectly reasonable. She’s working with quite serious economists, some of them friends. But she doesn’t pretend to be, to try, to hoping to institute radical institutional changes. Sanders does. Furthermore, she has not organized a mass political movement which Sanders did. And it’s had a lot of effect. That’s how you get people in Congress like [Rep. Alexandria] Ocasio-Cortez and others because of this movement.

I call bullshit. Nixons damage to this country goes far beyond the crimes he committed.
I am registered as a republican and will never again vote for a democrat, but putting our heads in the sand and
pretending the damage Nixon, reagan, and both bushes did to this country is negligible is insane.

The reality is that the only reason some bumbling Barney Fife lookalike imbecile was able to get in the
WhoreHouse in 2000 was because the republicans in congress were able to hamstring the democrat party over a
blowjob using the media to create public outrage.

Which has come back to bite them in the ass, because the democrats in congress have learned from this and are
now using the same tactic by hamstringing Trump and therefore the republican party for the next Presidential
      auction.

Nixons lying about watergate, Ford pardoning him, reagans depression that wrecked the steel industry and his
Iran Contra affair and letting Oliver North take the rap, then the republicans in congress not being able to deal
with Bill Clinton who was far more clever than they so they got him on a blow job ( take about silly insane
bullshit) and the whole cheney war on prosperity and lies about WMD so they could eek out some kind of
personal vendetta against Saddam did far more damage than what their crimes indicate.

What all of them did was destroy the average citizens faith in our government.
Prior to Nixon Americans had a somewhat pollyanna view of government and trusted our politicians, knowing

them to be flawed but considering them to have altruistic motives. With Nixon that was weaked. But the time

cheney took over the WhoreHouse that was destroyed.
The cheney’bush cabal set it all in concrete and made the entire public, even die hard conservatives, aware that

politicians are nothing but lying con artists.

Which is the only reason President Trump is in office. He portrayed himself as someone who was not a lifetime

appointee politicians who used his money to get into office so he could define our borders once again and turn us

back into the country this was when John Kennedy had his ass in the oval office seat.

Which is pretty much pie in the sky, but the american public wanted that illusion of our government again. And

      still do.

Again, this all started with Nixon and Ford putting the idea in Americas head that perhaps our government
      wasn’t so noble after all.
It took until cheney for the public to finally say “you guys suck and can’t be trusted” to the entire system.
When Trump either finally fails, or it comes to light that he is just another reagan, there will be no going back.
American citizens will never again trust government and will forever view government as the enemy of the state.

I am a political moderate leaning toward conservative, and respect Mr Choamskys seemingly unbiased views, but I think he is quite mistaken about Nixon. Even if Nixon was innocent, the entire way he handled Watergate put American citizens on the path to not trusting government.

“It’s increasingly becoming the case that a very small sector of voters, maybe 20% or so, who are white, often white nationalist, Christian, often evangelical, traditional, older, less educated, rural, can actually run the country.”

This statement is really bullshit, and is a false stereotype that has become very rhetorical and is a fantasy.
I voted for President Trump, I am indeed intelligent enough to know that cities aren’t fit for human habitation ( I was born and raised in a city, it was a decent place them, but that was a long time ago) , I am very well educated, and although not evangelical and not extremist anything, I do certainly believe in Jesus Christ and his Lordship.

The fact is, many of those I know who voted for President Trump, much like myself, bailed from the democrat party because it no longer represents democrats. The Republicans I know who claim to have voted for him range from being socially active family men to being extremely well educated. Most of the fools I come into contact with seem to simply recite the same rhetoric they hear on NPR and any of the insane amount of media resources that are mostly owned by just 6 companies. Most of which has turned into big brothers bullhorn against a President that appears to not be part of the good ole boy network.

It sickens me when there are these kinds of generalities made based on party affiliation. The reality is this countries average IQ is obviously not extremely high, partially due to our being infiltrated by those who are criminally here from third world shitholes, partially due to the fact that our system has had to dumb everything down in order to be “fair” to the growing segment of society that have brains that if made out of cotton wouldn’t make a Kotex for a firefly.
The reality is, both parties are chuck full of imbeciles with some very intellectually competent people and some who are potential MENSA members.
It is also a reality that nobody is intelligent enough to withstand the intense social engineering our Orwellian nightmare is subjected to, which is to say making wise decisions in casting a ballot is more about fortitude than aptitude. Those emotionally strong enough and intellectually wise enough ( wisdom does not take a high IQ, it is a gift some have been bestowed with) to be able to discern what is bullshit and what is absolute truth. Savvy doesn’t necessarily require a high IQ. And sometimes a high IQ is hindrance to wisdom. And much education is often a disaster in the hands of someone without the intelligence AND wisdom to exploit and synthesize the information education gives them access to for a positive purpose.
