Here is a thought to consider the next time you get into an argument with someone over stupid stuff.
Nothing is more annoying than an individual who will argue to the death over some inane detail or idea that ultimately does not matter anyway.
Scientific research has determined that individuals rate themselves as being far more competent than they really are. The Dunning-Kruger effect is a psychological rule which states it is the most incompetent who are the most confident, while the most intelligent doubt their own abilities. Translation: dumb people are too dumb to understand exactly how dumb they are.
Psychologist David Dunning writes: “If you’re incompetent, you can’t know you’re incompetent… The skills you need to produce a right answer are exactly the skills you need to recognize what a right answer is.”
The video ends with a bit of wit from comedian George Carlin – “Think of how stupid the average person is and realize half of them are stupider than that.”
The human brain remains a mystery even today, a collection of neurons, axons, glial cells and synapses which never stop working and sifting all the data which it receives daily. The random ability of an injured brain to heal itself by rewiring new pathways is a miracle, just as the dark mystery remains of why another brain similarly injured cannot be recovered.
The brain is a very complex organ which scientists continue to make new discoveries about every single day. Recent models of the organ in modern neuroscience treat the brain as a biological computer.
The computer metaphor draws an analogy between the mind as software and the brain as hardware, and while scientists and skeptics will argue against comparing the human brain to a computer, have always found the thought amusing. After all, it was human brains which designed the first processing machines, using random bits of knowledge to create a machine which sifts through random bits of data to reach a conclusion.
Consider checking out another theory to expand your thoughts. The computational theory of mind (CTM) holds that the mind is a computational system which is realized (i.e. physically implemented) by neural activity in the brain.
