Alarming parallels between ancient Rome and USA 2020

Today we direct our readers to a recent column by Conservative Review’s Daniel Horowitz titled, “We can no longer celebrate our independence. We must fight for it again.”

Its truths are difficult to absorb, but we can not — must not — turn away from the hard facts that constitute our new reality.

There’s plenty of blame to go around. Parental leniency, a result of being pals rather than doing the difficult job of parenting, shares the top of the list with the hard left overtaking America’s educational system,* instituting the mod, feeling-sparing concept of rewarding participation over achievement. This irrationality sets students up for failure in the adult workplace that requires competition and successful outcomes.

Our Democracy was won, not gifted to us. It takes dedication to keep it. Our youth need to be taught history. Those with knowledge build upon the past, rather than disrespectfully destroying it.

Too many Americans are the Romans of old, watching their society crumble before their eyes but preferring to be lulled into mindlessness by the distractions of “bread and circuses.” The Roman citizens lost their will to defend what they had built. Their previously held concepts of civic duty waned and they became ripe for takeover as ignorance and complacency took hold.

 This was written by Juvenal a highly regarded Roman historical satirist around 100 C.E. as he expressed his contempt for his countrymen:

“Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the people have abdicated our duties; for the people who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions — everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses.”

Devising a means of gaining and retaining power, the Roman elite pragmatically provided cheap food and free wheat to the citizens as well as gladiators fighting to the death or circuses as a placating diversion.

As mentally declining Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden said when attempting and failing to recite the 35-words of the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence, “You know the thing.”

The “thing” rational Americans who value our country know, it is imperative that President Donald Trump is reelected.
