Confession One: America WAS racist, and so was Dr. Suess. Both underwent a transformation from racist to leading anti-racist in record-breaking time. Confession Two: America USED TO believe in white supremacy. Then it became the leading nation to undo white supremacy in the world. In 1945 it parlayed victory in WWII to end the colonial subordination of blacks and Asians to white powers. Then, in 1964 white Americans took the unprecedented measure of voluntarily relinquishing power and creating a playing field where anyone of any color, creed, or gender could avail themselves to opportunities of their choosing. White privilege? This is majority privilege. Every nation has a majority that has the privileges and responsibilities that come from being the most numerous ethnic group. What is different in the United States is that it has been encouraging severe dilution of its majority through immigration. In 1964 America was 87% white. Today it is 60% non-Hispanic white.

So, if America isn’t systemically racist, and Americans are not white supremacists and don’t strive to maintain their majority privilege, what is going on? In America, racism is uniquely characterized as residual. This can be translated into racism does not interfere with equality of opportunity. But there is no power in appealing to all Americans as equal. Politicians cannot gain patronage by treating everyone as equal. Ethnic leaders would be out of a job. Political commentators would have to compete on competent news delivery rather than race-based partisan rhetoric. Because of this, Americans have to endure nightly reports of people being called racist that object to illegal immigrants carrying covid and fentanyl. Dr. Seuss being called a racist along with Abraham Lincoln, police officers, doctors, Conservatives, and anyone that attempts to uphold America’s anti-racist bona fides. America has entered a phase of hosting a discrimination circus. Anyone that contests it is called a racist and the conversation ends. What doesn’t end are the problems that cause racial disparities because they are unrelated to, or inconsequentially related, to racism.

People fueling the circus are rewarded with power and the ability to leverage public and private purses to develop patronage with more freebies and preferences. Ironically, this is cementing subordination. People that rely on others to live or succeed (like the government) are dependents. No one likes dependence, but it is hard to turn down free stuff and going to the head of the line. Ending dependence and truly enjoying the benefits of America’s copious freedoms and equality of opportunity that lead to a better life, relies on embracing the American creed: self-reliance, education, English speaking, and observing rule of law. The problem America faces today is that the ringmasters on a mission of increasing power and patronage are thwarting education to disadvantaged groups, they are encouraging dependence on government programs, and incredibly making exceptions to the rule of law by creating a two-tiered system of social justice for some and no justice for others. On a so-called mission of tackling discrimination, they are inadvertently or intentionally promoting it.
