Recently I started re-reading the book of Jeremiah. Although I’ve read Jeremiah several times before, this time was different. The world as I knew it is changing. My concern for the safety of family and friends in a country in decline has caused me some anxious moments.
Just as Jeremiah warned Judah of God’s anger due to their continual rejection of the true God, the gospel of redemption continues to be proclaimed throughout the world and yet I see a disregard for truth even among my closest friends. In Jeremiah’s day, the Lord warned “From the north destruction will break out on all who live in the land” (Jeremiah 1:14), and yet the people did not heed the warning, instead choosing to listen to false prophets who told them “nothing bad will ever happen to you” (Jeremiah 23:17).
I imagine Jeremiah’s dismay at Judah’s rejection of God’s clear warning. Jeremiah’s observation prompted him to ask, “why are wicked people successful, they grow prosperous and are very fruitful, they always talk about you, but they really care nothing about you” (Jeremiah 12:1b-2). But the Lord’s blessing is on those who put their trust and confidence in Him (Jeremiah 17:7).
