UPDATE: UK Reverses Decision to Halt Assange Extradition to US
Earlier today, 21WIRE editor Patrick Henningsen spoke to RT International about breaking news that a UK high court has reverse a previous decision which had blocked US effort to extradite WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange under indictments for espionage and hacking.
At a press conference after today’s hearing, Assange’s fiancee, Stella Morris, indicated that an appeal would be launched which may end up in the lower court.
The senior judges now believe that the while previous district judge, Vanessa Baraitser, had made her decision on the risk of Assange being held in highly restrictive prison conditions if extradited, US authorities have since given sufficient assurances that Assange would not face strict or oppressive measures if held in pre-trial, or even afterwards in the event of a conviction. However, there is nothing preventing the US from changing their policy at any time.
“That risk is in our judgment excluded by the assurances which are offered. It follows that we are satisfied that, if the assurances had been before the judge, she would have answered the relevant question differently,” said Lord Burnett.
Henningsen believes that Assange is a political prisoner, and that this intricate tag-team effort by the US and UK is designed to prolong Assange’s harsh detention in Britain’s notorious category A prison in Belmarsh, in hopes that Assange’s physical and mental condition deteriorates. Watch:
