An Invitation to All Zoos in Honor of Marius the Giraffe

The recent killing of Marius the giraffe at the Copenhagen Zoo has created a worldwide furor.

From my shamanic perception the central issue is not about one giraffe, or even two—it is about how animals are perceived, and how our perceptions are tied into the fate of all life on this planet.

Zoo animals are ambassadors for their species—representatives of the Other Nations—and they are here to help us heal the broken covenant between mankind, the animals and Mother Earth. As such they deserve the respect due a human ambassador. Killing them as “surplus” does not fit with that approach, and indeed only serves to support what is being done to animals in the wild when people in charge decide that a particular animal is not needed or wanted.

I went on a shamanic journey for guidance on what I could do to help the people and the animals, which resulted in the article Message from the Other Nations on the Death of Marius the Giraffe (which went viral). During that journey I was told,

“What is missing from all zoos is the awareness that animals possess a spirit, something our indigenous ancestors knew and respected. Animals are not just physical beings—they are also energetic and spiritual—and that reality must be honored for health and wholeness of all beings. No decision should be based solely on science or logic—for animals and people are more than that.”

It’s time to change the way that zoos are managed and, in so doing, potentially reverse the loss of habitat and life that is happening for the wild relatives that zoo animals represent. The best way to do that is to combine ALL approaches. When you do that the potential for global shift increases exponentially.

I get that every decent zoo is invested in conservation and wants to create a world where wildlife can be understood, where they can roam freely and where people can co-exist in harmony with them.

I want that, too.

But zoos cannot do that by alienating the public in the name of science or by breaking trust with the animals.

And so, I issue an open invitation to zoos worldwide: If your zoo is willing to explore incorporating a spiritual and energetic approach into zoo policies, programs and support for the animals, I am willing to help—please contact me. And I am not alone, there are many others who would step up and volunteer their assistance. By combining our respective backgrounds we can create a more holistic approach to supporting the animals, and in so doing create a better world for everyone.

So, which zoo is ready to be a pioneer? The animals are calling, will you answer their call?
