Three Essential Tips for Winter Dog Walking

Winter season can make it not only difficult but also potentially dangerous to walk your fluffy friend. Therefore, when it is freezing outside, windy and snowing, there are some additional things to keep in mind for safety reasons. Use these three tips to help you keep your pup safe and warm during your winter walks.

Provide Essential Gear

It may seem obvious, but it is really important to ensure your dog is warm enough during your winter walks. The kind of walking gear your fluffy friend needs will depend on the area you live in and the type of your dog. In case your dog has a very thick coat, and your winters stay above freezing, you probably won’t need additional gear.

On the other hand, if it is extremely cold and you have a small breed dog or a dog with low body fat or short coats, your four-legged friend needs an extra layer of protection. If your pet is susceptible to cold temperatures, wrap them up comfortably, but not too tight! For example, your dog may need a water-resistant coat, jacket or sweater and booties or rubber boots to keep your pet warm and safe from the winter cold. 

Stay Focused & Prepared

During the walks with your furry buddy make sure to stay alert to any hazards in the area and bring a dog first aid care (water, pet bandage, antibacterial spray or lotion intended to prevent infection and maybe even flashlights).

For example, items such as snowdrifts, ice on sidewalks and roads, frozen ponds, loose dogs and general activity on the roads – all of which can be a potential source of danger. Always keep your pup on a leash, belt or harness when outdoors for extra security. 

Also, don’t forget to monitor your dog’s behaviour while out walking in winter. This can be any signs of discomfort or pain, shivering or shaking or bad habits like eating snow, which could dangerously lower his or her body temperature as well as contain harmful chemicals or hidden objects.

Moisturise Your Dog’s Paws

Dry winter air, harsh cold temperatures and irritants like salts can make your dog’s paws cracked, rough and even split.
