New Zealand Moved the Last 51 Kakapos to a Remote Island — 31 Years Later, the Result Moved Everyone (Video)

This is a 16 June 2026 published video.

Kakapo are flightless parrots that are nocturnal and have very unusual breeding behavior. Even after being moved to safe habitats, they only nest when Rimu trees bear fruit, creating many challenges for the conservation program. Thanks to adjusted strategies, the Kakapo population has increased, opening new hope for their return to New Zealand’s native forests.

In 1995, the world’s kākāpō population plummeted to an all-time low of just 51 birds. Today, thanks to a monumental conservation effort, their population has surged. This unprecedented revival of the world’s only flightless parrot stands as one of the most remarkable wildlife restoration stories on the planet.

By the late 20th century, the kākāpō (Strigops habroptila) was essentially a ghost of New Zealand’s forests. Evolved for millions of years without ground predators, the moss-green, nocturnal parrot never developed a defense against invasive pests like rats, cats, and stoats. Instead of running or flying, they would freeze or try to camouflage themselves—a strategy that proved fatal on the ground.

To save the species from extinction, the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC) launched an aggressive emergency rescue in 1995. They gathered the very last 51 survivors on Earth and relocated them to remote, predator-free islands like Whenua Hou (Codfish Island) and Pukenui (Anchor Island)

Thirty-one years later, the result moved everyone. The kākāpō recovery team implemented rigorous, highly individualized management plans, treating every single bird with a name and a radio transmitter. Kākāpō only breed every two to four years, relying entirely on the irregular mass fruiting (masting) of the native rimu tree. During the recent mast years, conservationists observed record-breaking breeding seasons. An unprecedented hatching event resulted in dozens of new chicks, pushing the adult population past 230 birds. The population boom created a new challenge: overcrowding on the small offshore islands. Because of the successful recovery, conservationists began tentatively translocating kākāpō back to a fenced sanctuary on mainland New Zealand, Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari, allowing the birds to wander historical habitats they had not touched in decades.

While the kākāpō has stepped back from the absolute brink of extinction, the species remains critically endangered. The intensive care, artificial incubation, and supplementary feeding required to keep the population growing are massive undertakings. For long-term survival, the goal is to safely restore more of their historical mainland habitats so they can thrive naturally without constant, hands-on human intervention.
