Is Jared Loughner Really Competent to Stand Trial?
On Wednesday, defendant Jared Loughner pleaded not guilty to a new 49 count federal indictment, for the rampage killing of six, wounding of another 20 innocent people, and an attempt to assassinate U.S. Congressman Gabrielle Giffords.
The chilling photo of Loughner, depicting Jared shaved head and little smirk is still haunting us, as well as the victims of the Tucson massacre.
U.S. District Judge Larry Burns expressed his concerns that Loughner may not be competent to stand the trial, observing his mental state and “affect” during the two-hour proceedings on Wednesday. During the whole time Loughner was smiling, according to news reports. Judge Burns was not convinced that Loughner can understand the proceedings and that his defense will be of any aid if this was the case.
