What makes Charles Gayle on stage occurs in many ways at the same time without a need-to- not realize the changes: their music is rough, almost gritty, semi-desert bar as a novel beat, while maintaining a level of coolness, elegance ‘strictly friendly’, but no mistake: this character at once rude and exquisite decisions not based on style, an instrument to sound one way or another, playing the saxophone with a stomach sometimes gracefully and sometimes not: Charles Gayle is a total virtuoso, of course, but need not exaggerate, we will not see a guy of 71 years showing signs of flamboyant virtuosity, doing sleight with his saxophone, simply because the virtuosity of Charles Gayle is different: over many things, and may sound corny, Gayle’s music is sincere, executed the instrument (as the saxophone, piano or drums) with a humility whose best contribution is to open a kind of space where the listener does not need to put an obsessive attention to detail, that instead of facing the listener plantándosele brazenly front (as sometimes happens with some of the more frenetic free jazz and complex, and is also a big reason why some people simply not tolerated) is limited to stand-offered- unpretentious. Faced with a tendency to abigarrar with notes in the shortest time possible, Gayle plays like jerks, as if coughing, but in a way so elegant, so serene, that one half does not stop listening to revise parts of it, touch them so that just happen, they flow. The music of Charles Gayle, say, goes with the flow, but this does not mean it’s like putting on Gandhi jazz background music while you search for books, for while Gayle played as if he fell the notes of the sleeves, your listening pleasure doing so, it is still very risky free jazz and very complex. Thus described, it seems we are talking about any jazz musician who masters his instrument with such ease that the genre requires, and with an extra to make it more attractive-but is that what makes Gayle, forged 20 years playing in the streets – and continue to do so from time to time, make such incredible music.
