A Darker Shade Of Blue

Dawn DNLS 3006 (UK) [2LP]
Beat Goes On BGOCD231 (UK) [2CD]

Note: This set was also issued as two separate LPs under John Surman’s name, Vogue VJD 505/1 and VJD 505/2. A 2-CD set called ‘The Trio featuring John Surman: The Dawn Sessions’ (Sequel NEE CD 303) includes both this set and ‘The Trio: Conflagration’. Recorded March 1970, location not given.

John Surman, baritone and soprano saxophones, bass clarinet; Barre Phillips, bass; Stu Martin, drums

Dawn: It’s in Excellent condition for the vinyl and VG- for the sleeve. CD (Item 603706) BGO (UK), 1970

Rare bit of free jazz by this trio of British players from the early 70′s. The music is very intense, without any of the noodling that sometimes ruins Brit sessions from the time. Surman plays baritone, soprano, and bass clarinet, and he really blows like mad in some passages. 2 LPs worth of material, with the tracks “Dee Tune”, “Veritably”, “Oh, Dear”, and “Caractacus”. (Out of print. Booklet has some light staining.)

_2.
Originally released on Dawen records in 1970, this rare free jazz album was reissued by PYE records on the Vogue label using the original masters; the sound quality of this album is stunning! The Dawn original will cost you in excess of £100 these days. I’ve put a low start on this album, so everyone will get a chance to own a piece of jazz history.

In the autumn of 1969, John Surman decided to make a break and joined forces with Barre Phillips and Stu Martin, to form a group they called The Trio. Phillips had a varied background, having worked as a sideman with Archie Shepp, Jimmy Giuffre and George Russell, as well as performing solo in Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic. Martin had spent a good deal of time in big bands, coming to Europe originally in 1959 as Quincy Jones’ drummer and subsequently playing with Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Maynard Ferguson, as well as being one-fourth of Gary Burton’s first quartet. Before taking a job, Surman, Phillips and Martin were determined to get things right, so for three months they played, talked and listened inside an oak-beamed Belgian farmhouse about thirty miles outside Brussels. This album represents the music they were setting out to achieve at those early rehearsals and discussions.
