“Recorded in Cologne, this fine set pits Mengelberg in duo and trio settings with a group of fine and highly eclectic players.
The sound of Godard’s serpent is still one of the most unusual in contemporary music; however, contrasting as it does with Pott’s drily vivid saxophone and Hebrer’s hard-edged, throaty trumpet, it makes perfect textural sense.
Above all, one senses that Mengelberg is enjoying himself here. His touch is relaxed, and light, his ideas suitably skittish, and there is not a hint of a strain in the flow of ideas”.
