‘Anima’ provides live performance and offers three unwontedly stretched-out tracks on which the saxophonist solos at length, though with minimum of actual development, ceding the foreground to the rhythm section for much of the time.
Chapin’s sound is ever more refined, and certainly by no means as blunt as formerly; but the Dolphy influence is still in place on both versions of ‘Lift Off’ and has allowed him to explore the limits of harmonic organization, while staying inside essentially jazz structures.

“…Anima is ‘life spirit.’ In Italian the word means, ‘soul.’ It represents to me the mysterious feminine—the creative force. That’s the well that I am trying to drink from. And for me, the truly great musicians are the ones who draw from that well. I’ve always liked the shamans, the medicine men of the music. Roland Kirk, for example, he dipped heavily into the dream world. And Sun Ra, he just lives in that magic kingdom place.”
