Whiskeytown National Recreation Area in California

I’ve been painting the last few days in Northern CA with my friend Hai-Ou Hou. We are staying in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. It’s in the Lake Shasta/Redding area. I’ve been through the area many times in my travels from Oregon to CA or AZ. I’ve even stayed in a motel in Redding. But, I can honestly say that I’ve never given the area much though since I’m always on the road coming or going. When Hai-Ou asked me if I wanted to go, I thought what the heck, it’ll get me out of the heat in AZ. Even though it can get hot in this area, it is nothing like Phoenix.

I have been pleasantly surprised with the diversity and things to paint. We don’t have internet and have stopped at Starbucks to logon for a bit. I’ve taken some photos and video, but it’s inconsistent with downloading things.

This is the third day, so I thought I would post some of the work, although I can’t find all the photos of my painting right now. I’ll have to sort through them better later. The video below is of the lake at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. This was yesterday morning.

A little shaky with the phone, but I’ll get better.

This morning Hai-Ou and I painted along Brandy Creek. We set up just before the sun starting lighting up the creek and foliage. It was constantly changing as the sun was moving up in the sky.

I painted all the grays in this painting to quickly get the mass of colors in the scene. Next I layed the bits of really dark shadows in. Last were the lights. I kept the painting simple without detail except in the focal area. Still Shaky on the video below.
