BBC Any Answers to Any Questions

A few weeks back I made the mistake of contacting Any Answers on Radio 4 about something that is important to me.

This was my original email to them:

“I live near St Davids. I moved here 27 years ago.
Because of the location I get Broadband provided by a ex military communications unit.
It was funded by a Welsh Govt subsidy.
It is no longer fit for purpose.

The idea of free wifi is one of the best I have heard from any political party.
It would democratise access to the internet and also rejuvenate rural communities. And be cheaper and with wider economic results than HS2.

I am currently working on 2 books. One with Robert Macfarlane who lives in Cambridge, publisher is in London, designer in Australia.
My wifi is down, again and I have unreliable phone signal. Currently using hotspot to type this.

I don’t wish to have to move to house to continue to work.
I would happily pay £25 a month extra tax for a reliable service…..

So, well done Labour for coming up with a different and imaginative solution.
Just to say though, fibre to the door isn’t the answer in places like this.”

When the researcher phoned I spoke of access to wifi for all, how it democratises learning, how those in power fail to understand that not every home has a computer or wifi, how wifi could reinvigorate rural economies.

But when I was connected to Anita for live broadcast I was cut off after my introduction. So I thought I would put my points here, instead. Because I think it is important.

My wifi is working at the moment, for a while. It costs me £24 a month, goes off at least once or twice a week. I would gladly pay £24 extra tax a month to enable others to share a more stable form of wifi. But then I would like electricity to be nationalised again, water, trains.

Whichever way you vote, whether you agree with me or not, please vote.
