How to Give Productive Feedback on Photography

If you have been asked to give feedback on photography, you have been given a very important role. After all, the feedback that you give can shape the future of the person in question. You can either inspire them to do more and achieve more, or you can end up stunting their growth because they feel like they won’t be able to make the improvements that are required and that their work is a disappointment.

This is not said to put pressure on your shoulders, purely to enable you to give constructive and effective feedback that is going to help the person to grow and do better. With that being said, continue reading to discover some tips and useful advice on how to give productive feedback on photography.

Make Sure You Are Constructive

Firstly, it is vital that you instruct the person on different ways that they can improve their photography. It is all about the little nuances that will make a difference. For example, you could recommend that the person tries a different angle. Alternatively, you could teach the person about lighting and how this impacts their photography.

Lighting is often one of the most difficult things to get right when it comes to photography, especially for beginners, yet it can make a massive difference to the end outcome. Teaching the aspiring photographer about things like this can make a big difference. You are giving them constructive criticism that can help them to take better photographs going forward.

Be Positive

Rather than saying what you don’t like about the photographs, you can touch on small areas of improvement or things that they can do better. You could even show the budding photographer some other pieces of work out there, by using an online photo sharing website, so that they can gain inspiration and see what others are doing. You can point out things they have done wrong and right so that you can teach them through other people’s work as well.

Highlight the Positives

Aside from this, make sure that you take the time to point out what the photographer has done right. After all, knowing your strengths and weaknesses is what is important in any sort of field. You need to understand what you are doing right and where you are going wrong. Therefore, it makes sense to point out where the budding photographer has mastered their skill. Give them praise for the things they have done correctly.

We hope that the advice and suggestions that have been mentioned above will help you when you are giving feedback to someone who is passionate and wants to learn more about photography. No one is going to be perfect at any art or skill to begin with. It takes hard work and a lot of dedication, yet it also takes the right guidance and mentoring too. By providing constructive feedback that helps the individual to grow, you really can make a big difference in their photography career, and they may thank you for it.
